Gazog, Son of Zorg is an optional boss in the
Grandery region of
Absolum. While he uses fewer attacks than other early-game bosses like Rudolf, his massive spiked mace delivers heavy damage, and his slow attack wind-ups can throw off your timing. The fight is a great test of your
deflection timing and
positioning.
Key Philosophy: Deflect everything that doesn't flash red. Gazog is slow, which means his attacks are highly punishable once you master his rhythm.
Absolum: How To Beat Gazog, Son of Zorg
General Battle Strategy
Gazog has two phases, with Phase Two introducing longer, more challenging variations of his core attacks.
- Be Aggressive: Absolum is an active combat game. You should be dealing damage and mixing in your deflects and dodges to keep up the pressure.
- Use Throwables: Gazog is a large target who stays on-screen, making him ideal for quick, heavy damage from any throwable items you have stocked.
- Save Your Ultimate: As an early-game boss, avoid wasting your ultimate attack on Gazog if you intend to continue your run.
- The Key Difference: Gazog is the "safer" early choice over Rudolf, but his high damage output and deceptive wind-ups demand precise timing.
Countering Gazog's Attacks (Phase 1)
In the first phase, Gazog is slow and hits in short bursts.
Attack Name | Visual Cue | Recommended Counter | Notes on Countering |
Downward Thrust | Raises mace high, brings it down with force for a single hit. | Dodge Downwards and follow up with a punish. | Dodging is the superior option here as it allows you to immediately strikeback. Alternatively, a deflect works, but you'll have to dash to closethe distance for a punish. |
Spin Attack | Spins his mace around twice. | Deflect the first hit, then Dash underneath the second. | DO NOT DODGE. Attempting to dodge will result in being caught in the spin animation.Deflecting the first hit and getting underneath him for the second isthe best way to create a punish window. |
Red Flashing Attack – Divekick | Gazog flashes RED and squats for a second, then jumps to divekick in your direction. | Dodge or simply move downwards out of the way. | DO NOT DEFLECT OR JUMP. Red attacks break your guard. Getting out of the way is easy and gives you time to set up your next offensive move. |
Countering Gazog's Attacks (Phase 2)
Once Gazog's health is reduced by about 40%, he roars and enters Phase Two. His attacks become multi-hit combos.
Attack Name | Visual Cue | Recommended Counter | Notes on Countering |
Downward Thrust (Buffed) | Brings the mace down three times. | Deflect all three hits. After the third, dash underneath the fourth for damage. | Deflecting is necessary to maintain footing against the multi-hit combo. The final dash and punish are your opening. |
Spin Attack (Buffed) | Spins his mace a total of five times. | Deflect each of the five hits. | This is your biggest test of timing. If you successfully deflect all fivehits, Gazog will be exhausted and vulnerable, creating a major openingfor you to punish him with a long combo. |
Horn Blow | Blows his horn to call for reinforcements (goblins). | Interrupt with your fastest attacks (hit or miss). | You can technically interrupt this move, but minions will often appearregardless. Focus your attention on clearing the smaller enemies quickly before they overwhelm you, then get back on Gazog. |
Associated Achievement
Defeating Gazog, Son of Zorg will unlock the There Can Be Only One achievement/trophy.
Mastering this fight by focusing on deflection rhythm and avoiding the reddivekick will prove that you've grasped the core timing necessary tosucceed in the deeper regions of Absolum.
