This introduces players to the Polygonal Scanner, a tool that can be a bit tricky to master initially. Understanding its efficient use is key to quickly finding vital mining and organic deposits.

How to Use the Polygonal Scanner in The Alters

The Polygonal Scanner is your primary tool for pinpointing hidden resource deposits. Here’s a breakdown of how touse it effectively:

Select the Polygonal Scanner:

• Hold down the "Q" key to bring up your radial tool wheel and select the Polygonal Scanner.
• Alternatively, you can directly press the "2" key to quickly switch to it without using the wheel.

Identify Potential Deposit Areas:

• Look for visual cues on the landscape, such as geysers, which often indicate the presence of underground deposits.
• You can also check your map for icons that might hint at potential deposit nodes.
• On your scanner's display, darker red areas in the heatmap indicate a closer proximity to a resource vein.

Place Scanners Strategically (The "Triangle Trick"):

• Once you're in a potential deposit area, place your first Polygonal Scanner.
• You have a capacity to place at least six scanners at a time. Each scanner has a limited effective range; they must be placed within approximately 5 meters of each other to form a continuous scan area. If you go beyond this distance, thescanners won't be able to effectively map what's underneath.
• The "Triangle Trick": The most efficient method is to form triangles with your scanner placements. Quickly spam the placement button, always trying to place the nextscanner at the maximum effective distance from the previous one (you'llsee a numerical distance, aim for "0.1" meters for maximum coverage).Continue drawing triangles to cover a wider area.
• Repositioning Scanners: It doesn't matter how many times you place scanners. After you'veplaced all six, you can pick them all up and deploy them in a differentpart of the area. The previous scan results will remain visible,allowing you to gradually map out the deposit.

Utilize Vibration Scan (Holding "F"):

• While in Polygonal Scanner mode, you can also hold down the "F" key (default interaction key) to activate a vibration scan.
• This will emit sonar-like circles, visually signaling the direction and approximate location from whichthe deposit node's vibrations are originating. This can help you home in on the precise spot more quickly.

Confirming the Deposit:

• Keep spamming and repositioning your scanners until you have fully mapped and scanned the entire deposit node.
• Once the full deposit node has been successfully found and confirmed, you will automatically get all your Polygonal Scanners back.
• At this point, you can then switch to Building Mode and place a Mining Outpost directly on the newly discovered deposit node to begin extracting Organics or Metals.
