How To Fast Travel in The Alters

In The Alters, you assume the role of Jan Dolski, a space explorer marooned on a hostile alien planet. Survival hinges on building a resilient base, meticulously gathering resources, and evading the sun's deadly radiation. This necessitates frequent and efficient traversal across the vast landscape. Since time is a precious resource in the game, its fast travel mechanics become incredibly useful. This guide will explain how to unlock and utilize fast travel in The Alters, as well as highlight its importance.

How To Unlock Fast Travel in The Alters

The fast travel mechanic is introduced relatively early in the game, specifically during the Organics Matter quest.

First Mining Outpost: During the "Organics Matter" quest, you will construct your very first Mining Outpost.

Activate Terminal: Once the Mining Outpost setup is complete, you can interact with a panel located nearby. This action will immediately open up the game's fast travel map.

Expand Fast Travel Points: Initially, you won't have many travel destinations. However, you will progressively unlock more fast travel points by:

• Building additional Mining Outposts at different resource deposits across the map.
• Constructing Travel Pylons in custom locations.

Accessing Fast Travel from Base: A similar fast travel terminal is also located inside your main base. You can choose to travel to any of your unlocked points directly from within the base itself.Cost-Free Travel: The best aspect of fast travel in The Alters is that it does not consume any resources or require the use of additional items.

Travel Pylons: Custom Fast Travel Points

While Mining Outposts are restricted to predetermined spots on the map, Travel Pylons offer much more flexibility:

• Placement: You can place Travel Pylons anywhere on the map, effectively creating custom fast travel spots at a later stage in the game once you've researched and begun crafting them.
• Connection Requirement: It is crucial that all such Travel Pylons are connected to your main base using the green-colored power lines. If a Travel Pylon is not actively connected to your base's power grid, it will not count as an active fast travel point and cannot be used.

Why Is Fast Traveling Important?

Fast traveling is an incredibly important mechanic in The Alters due to the game's strict in-game timing system and environmental hazards:

• Limited Outdoor Time: Initially, you are only able to remain outside your base from 7 AM to 9 PM (this curfew can even advance to 8 PM later in the game due toradiation). All your outdoor activities, including resource gathering,exploration, and questing, must be completed within this narrow window.
• Time Compression: For every three seconds in real-time, one minute passes in-game. Thismeans in-game time passes quickly, making efficient movement critical.
• Maximize Daily Activities: Fast traveling provides a highly efficient way to reach distantlocations without expending a significant portion of your limited dailyoutdoor time on physical traversal. This essentially allows you to get more done each in-game day, optimize your resource runs, and complete objectives more effectively before the radiation curfew forces you back indoors.
