How to Deal With Back-Wall Shots in Rematch

In Rematch, a common offensive strategy involves shooting the ball high above the net to bounce it off the back wall. This tactic aims to set up the initial shooter or a teammate for an easy volley into an open goal, especially if the keeper dives prematurely. While this can feel overwhelming for keepers and defenders, there are thankfully several effective ways to counter back-wall shots in Rematch.

What To Do As A Keeper Against Back-Wall Shots In Rematch?

Don't Dive Early When back-wall shots are a frequent tactic, the worst mistake a goalkeeper can make is diving too early. This action leaves the goal wide open for easy volleys. Instead, prioritize reacting to the ball's trajectory rather than trying to predict it.The only scenario where an early jump might be acceptable is if the initial shot goes only slightly above the goal. In this case, keepers can jump straight up by pressing Y/Triangle/Spacebar without inputting any directional movement.Wait To Catch The Ball After the ball rebounds off the back wall, goalkeepers don't need to fixate on the ball itself. Instead, they should shift their attention to the blue circle on the floor, which indicates the ball's projected landing spot. The keeper has two main options:
  • Stand and Jump: Position yourself directly on this blue circle and jump straight upwards as the ball descends.
  • Dive Towards Landing Spot: Alternatively, dive towards the projected landing spot as the ball is falling.
  • Both methods aim to catch the ball before an attacker can volley it in. In some situations, keepers may even find themselves in a position to use a volley to clear the ball themselves.

What To Do As A Defender Against Back-Wall Shots In Rematch?

Defenders play an integral role in neutralizing back-wall shots. The first line of defense is to block the initial shot. The defender marking the player with possession should maintain tightcoverage, minimizing their space and forcing lower-quality passes offthe back wall.

Beyond attempting a direct tackle, which is ideal, defenders can jump using Y/Triangle/Q to try and block the ball's trajectory.

Waiting In The Box & Clearing The BallOnce the ball has been shot off the back wall, defenders should focus on being inside the goal box, tightly marking attackers. Position yourself on the side of the attacker that is closest to your goal.

As the ball begins to descend, its projected landing point will beindicated by a circle on the floor. Defenders should aim to be near this spot. From there, they can attempt to head the ball away:

    • Xbox: X
    • PlayStation: Square
    • PC: Right Click

Crucially, aim this header away from your goal. Since passes/headers in Rematch can be directed in any direction, it doesn't matter which way yourplayer or the camera is currently facing – focus on aiming the ballclear.

All of these techniques for dealing with back-wall shots in Rematch can also be applied to normal crosses.

It's important to remember that attacking volleys will often gain priority over defensive headers. Therefore, ensure you rise up first before the attacker has a chance to strike. Additionally, in somecases, defenders can also utilize these volleys to clear the ball, potentially even with spectacular overhead kicks.
