Even something as fundamental as controlling the ball in Rematch can be challenging, especially when dealing with long passes or crosses, as the ball often passes right through the player if no action is taken. However, there are a few distinct methods for controlling the ball, each suited for different scenarios, all designed to help players maintain possession, set up teammates, and score more goals.
The most common and versatile way to control the ball in Rematch, even when it's slightly out of reach, is by using the Push Ball button.
Xbox: A
PlayStation: Cross
PC: Spacebar
Players should press this button when a blue diamond appears around the ball, indicating it's within reach. This method works whether the ball is on the ground or in the air, allowing for headers if the ball is elevated. It's crucial to also input a direction using the Left Stick or WASD to guide the touch.
While this method is highly effective, it does have a minor drawback: the ball is technically "pushed away," meaning you might unintentionally direct it towards an opponent. However, this touch is generally small and highly useful in most situations. This mechanic is especially necessary when the ball is bouncing over your player, as your character will jump to control it.
Players can practice controlling the ball in Freeplay mode by booting it away and recalling it using the Right Stick (controller) or the Middle Mouse Button (PC).
If the ball is in mid-air and you want to keep it elevated, perhaps to evade a slide tackle or quickly get it over an opponent, you should use the Lob Push Ball mechanic. This is also the same input for performing a rainbow flick.
Xbox: RB + A
PlayStation: R1 + Cross
PC: C
When activated, your player will either jump to meet a high ball or flick it upwards with their feet if it's lower. Similar to the normal Push Ball, a direction input is essential. This can enable you to flick the ball over your own head or to the side of a defender, creating space.
This technique is particularly useful when receiving a long ball with a defender right on your heels, allowing you to flick or head the ball over them and bypass their challenge.
When the ball is approaching directly to your feet or chest, and your player is facing it, there's a specific button to perfectly control the ball and make it "stick" to your feet, giving you immediate close control.
Xbox: LT
PlayStation: L2
PC: Left Ctrl
This action puts your player into a Skill Stance. This stance perfectly sets you up for dribbling the ball, allowing for immediate close control and the execution of skills, which are crucial for avoiding tackles in Rematch.
