What Is a Magnetic Storm in The Alters?

A Magnetic Storm is a catastrophic event in The Alters that drastically intensifies environmental hazards and puts severe strain on your base:

• Heightened Radiation: The storm significantly spikes the effects of Radiation Sickness. Being outside during a Magnetic Storm will cause radiation to accumulate much faster than usual.
• Rapid Filter Depletion: The Radiation Filters in your Machinery Room will deplete rapidly during the calamity, demanding more power for your base's Radiation Shielding.
• Module Erosion: Modules within your base will suffer erosion and damage, requiring prompt repairs from you and your Alters. Beware: losing too many modules can lead to the loss of your entire base.

However, Magnetic Storms also present a silver lining:

• No Morale Penalty: During a storm, working extended shifts will not negatively affect the morale or happiness of your Alters, as survival becomes the utmost priority.
• Increased Mining Rate: The resource mining rate increases by 50% during Magnetic Storms. If adequately prepared, this apparent disaster can be leveraged to your advantage for significant resource gains.

How To Deal With a Magnetic Storm

Successfully navigating a Magnetic Storm requires proactive management and strategic allocation of your Alters:

Prioritize Repairs and Filters:

• Immediately assign two Alters to Base Maintenance. Their primary task will be to repair damaged modules.
• Take charge of the Workshop yourself (as Jan). Your top priority should be to produce as many Repair Kits and Radiation Filters as possible.
• Crucial Note: If your Radiation Filter fails completely, you will have approximately five hours to craft and install a new one. During this critical window, yourentire base will be flooded with radiation, further endangering yourAlters.

Other Essential Tasks During the Storm:

• Food Production: Base operations cannot halt entirely. Cooking should continue uninterrupted. Assign any idle Alters to the Kitchen to ensure a steady food supply.
• Resource Refining: If your Refinery is set up and you have raw ALX or Enriched Metals available, prioritize refining them. Magnetic Storms significantly increase the demand forrefined Metals and Organics.
• "Crunch" Setting for Shifts: Magnetic Storms can last for more than 24 hours, meaning you and yourAlters will need to sleep at some point.
