In the sci-fi survival game The Alters, you control Jan, a brilliant scientist, and his "Alters"—clones with distinct personalities, each representing a different life path Jan could have taken. Surviving on a harsh, radiation-plagued planet requires difficult choices, and none are more morally ambiguous than the decision you face at the start of Act 2 concerning the Alters' deteriorating health. This is where the concept of Tabula Rasa comes into play.

The Alters: How To Get Tabula Rasa

The Lose-Lose Situation in The Alters

At the beginning of Act 2, the Scientist Jan discovers a devastating truth: the Alters are suffering from a rare neurological condition due to their lab-grown brains. You are presented with two unenviable solutions, each with significant ethical and narrative consequences:

Solution 1: Tabula Rasa

A blank Jan Dolski, referred to as "Tabula Rasa" (Latin for "clean slate"), is grown in the womb. The intention is to harvest healthy brain tissues from this unburdened clone to implant into the other Alters, curing their condition.

Solution 2: Neural Implants

Alternatively, you can choose to plug neural implants into the Alters. While this would save them from the neurological condition, it would also allow Ally Corp (the powerful corporation) to control their brain chemistry, track them, and monitor them. This effectively removes their anonymity and leaves them at the mercy of the authorities.

The Consequences:

The path you choose has a profound impact on the game's narrative and the reactions of your Alters:

If you choose Tabula Rasa (Maxwell's method):
- The Scientist will euthanize Tabula Rasa after harvesting the necessary brain tissue.
- This heartbreaking decision will cause some of your Alters to rebel and establish their own separate base.
- However, the remaining Alters will maintain their anonymity from Ally Corp.
If you choose Neural Implants (Lena's method):
- A different group of Alters will rebel.
- The Alters will be in constant danger of being tracked and controlled by Ally Corp.
- Furthermore, the people on Earth, particularly those Jan interacts with, will be furious about this corporate intervention.

How To Get Tabula Rasa (The Awakened Clone)

While the initial choice presents Tabula Rasa as a means to an end (a braintissue donor), there's a specific set of actions you can take to bringhim to life as a (barely) functioning Alter.

To get an awakened Tabula Rasa, you must:

Create him: You must choose the path that involves growing the Tabula Rasa for its brain tissue.

Administer the Implants: During the process, you must also choose to administer the neural implants to the other Alters.

This specific combination of choices leads to a critical event:

During the chaos of an Alter rebellion (triggered by the ethical dilemma), the Scientist will forget to administer Tabula Rasa's sedative.2
As a result, Tabula Rasa will awaken instead of being euthanized for his brain tissue.

Tabula Rasa's Role and "Life Lesson":
