When you first land on the island in SCUM, you'll have minimal gear. The game prompts you to craft a stone knife. As you search for materials, you'll notice nearby rocks appear at the top of your screen within the inventory interface. This is the Vicinity mechanic in action.

• Understanding Vicinity: Items displayed in your vicinity are not in your inventory. They are simply objects on the ground within your immediate area. If you walk away from them, they will disappear from your vicinity view and the world, only to reappear if you return to that precise location. They do not magically transfer to your personal inventory.
• Storing Items: To actually store items and add them to your personal inventory, you must manually drag them from the Vicinity tab into one of your character's equipped storage slots:
  • Pant pockets
  • Shirt pockets
  • One of your two holsters
  • Directly into your hands (though this limits you to carrying only one item in each hand at a time).
• Dropping Items: If you attempt to pick up an item into your hands when they are already full, you will drop whatever you are currently holding. This can lead to frustration, especially when your newly crafted stone knife seems to vanish. Inventory management is a must-learn from the start.
• Crafting with Vicinity: To craft items like the Improvised Courier Backpack, all the necessary components must be present in the same vicinity area. You cannot craft if some materials are in your inventory and others are on the ground elsewhere.

If you can't find multiple bushes close together, a useful tip is to craft a bundle of sticks from one bush, carry that bundle, and then collect more sticks fromanother bush. Bundling sticks allows you to carry more in a singleinventory slot.

Gathering Rags: Rags are obtained by tearing up clothing. If your pockets are full when you attempt to tear up clothing, the rags will drop onto the ground inyour vicinity. If you then leave that spot, those rags will be leftbehind and disappear from your view. Always ensure you have available pocket space before tearing up clothes for rags.
