Few Pokémon are as notorious for being a trainer's nightmare as
Abra. This elusive Psychic-type is famous for its immediate tendency to disappear at the slightest disturbance, giving you only one fleeting chance to catch it before it vanishes. However, in the vast, explorable environment of
Pokémon Legends: Z-A's Lumiose City, Abra are thankfully plentiful, and securing one early on is entirely possible.A fully evolved
Alakazam is a powerhouse, and its
Mega Evolution makes it one of the most formidable Psychic-types available. Mastering the unique challenges of catching and evolving Abra is essential for any trainer looking to add this glass cannon to their team. This comprehensive guide breaks down where to find Abra, the necessary steps to evolve it into Alakazam, the rare location of its final form, and how to unlock the powerful
Mega Alakazam.
Pokemon Legends Z-A: How To Get Alakazam
Part 1: The Elusive Catch—Finding Abra
Unlike many rare Pokémon, Abra can be accessed very early in your
Legends: Z-A journey, making it a viable team member for the majority of the game.
Where to Locate Abra
- Early Access: When you first gain the freedom to explore the Wild Zones (Zones 1–5), you'll have access to Abra’s location.
- Target Zone 5: Abra can be found spawning in Wild Zone 5.
- Specific Location: Look for them on the rooftops of Zone 5. You can typically find a ladder inside the Wild Zone area that leads up to this elevated position.
The Catching Challenge
The biggest obstacle is Abra's signature ability to Teleport away if startled.
- Be Sneaky: If alerted, Abra will immediately vanish. You must approach it with stealth to ensure you get a chance to throw a Poké Ball.
- One and Done: Even if you hit it with a Poké Ball, the catch must be successful on the very first throw. If it pops out, it will instantly disappear.
- Maximize Odds: Since the Abra in this starting area are fairly low-leveled, they aremore likely to be caught on the first throw than their high-levelcounterparts. For good measure, always use a specialized ball like a Great Ball or Ultra Ball to drastically increase your odds of a successful capture.
- If You Fail: Thankfully, since Abra are plentiful in Zone 5, you can always move onto the next one if your first attempt fails, allowing you to quicklysecure this crucial Psychic-type.
Part 2: The Evolution Path to Alakazam
The evolution line from Abra to Alakazam is straightforward but requires a specific action that deviates from standard leveling.
| Pokémon | Type(s) | Evolution Requirement |
| Abra | Psychic | Evolves after reaching Level 16 |
| Kadabra | Psychic | Can Only Evolve After Trading |
| Alakazam | Psychic | Final Stage |
The Trading Necessity
While evolving Abra into Kadabra is achieved through basic leveling, evolving Kadabra into Alakazam requires a trade. Unlike Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which provided an item to bypass trade evolutions, Z-A reverts to the traditional method.
- The Process: To get Alakazam, you must trade a Kadabra to another player using Legends: Z-A's Link Play feature. Kadabra will evolve upon the completion of the trade. Thesimplest method is to use a trustworthy friend or contact to trade yourKadabra and then immediately trade the resulting Alakazam back to you.
- Skip a Step: If you want to shorten the grind, you can catch a wild Kadabra directly once you gain access to Wild Zone 9.
Part 3: The Endgame Alternative (Catching Alakazam)
If you absolutely cannot find a partner to trade with, or simply prefer to catch your Alakazam in the wild, there is a very late-game option.
- Location: Once you have unlocked all available Wild Zones, you can occasionally find a powerful Alpha Alakazam spawning in Wild Zone 20.
- The Hunt: This is a rare spawn, occurring day or night, and Wild Zone 20 istypically accessed near the end of the game. You will likely need torepeatedly refresh the area (by fast-traveling) until the Alpha appears.
- Progression Trade-Off: While this method lets you complete your Pokédex without trading, ifyou're hoping to utilize Alakazam throughout your playthrough, youshould prioritize trading earlier in the game.
Part 4: Unlocking Mega Alakazam
The true power of this line is realized with Mega Evolution. Thankfully, obtaining the necessary Mega Stone is possible relatively early.
- Access the Vendor: As soon as you reach Rank F, you gain access to Quasartico Inc.
- The Alakazite: This shop allows you to trade Mega Shards for various Mega Evolution Stones. The Alakazite is fortunately one of the stones available right away, though it is quite expensive.
- Cost: You will need 360 Mega Shards to acquire the Alakazite. Given how many Mega Shards are scatteredacross the city, this is achievable before the final stages of the game.
- Activation: Once you have the stone, add Alakazam to your party and ensure it is holding the Alakazite. You can then trigger the Mega Evolution during battles, unleashing the full potential of Mega Alakazam.
