How to Kill the Shivering Isles Gatekeeper in Oblivion Remastered

The Shivering Isles DLC for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered introduces players to a bizarre and unpredictable realm ruled by the Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath. However, before you can fully explore this strange land, you must first overcome a formidable obstacle—the Gatekeeper, an invincible guardian blocking the path at the Gates of Madness.
Many players find themselves stuck here, as the Gatekeeper is immune to conventional attacks. Fortunately, there is a way to defeat it—but you’ll need to follow a specific sequence of events. Below, we’ll walk you through how to kill the Gatekeeper, obtain the keys to Mania and Dementia, and progress through the quest Through the Fringe of Madness.

Step 1: Entering the Shivering Isles and Finding Passwall

After passing through the Strange Door in Oblivion Remastered, you’ll arrive in The Fringe, the first region of the Shivering Isles. While some players may rush straight to the Gates of Madness, this is a mistake—you cannot defeat the Gatekeeper without proper preparation.
Instead, head to Passwall, a small village where the locals gather. Here, you’ll meet:

• Shelden, the self-proclaimed mayor.
• Felas Sarandas, a Dark Elf adventurer.

Speak to them, and they’ll mention the Gatekeeper, as well as a group of adventurers planning to challenge it. After the conversation, both Shelden and Felas will start walking toward the Gates of Madness—follow them.

Step 2: Witnessing the Gatekeeper’s Power

When you arrive at the Gates of Madness, you’ll see a group of armored adventurers preparing to fight the Gatekeeper. Talk to Shelden again to trigger the battle.

Possible Bug Fix:

Sometimes, the adventurers may not attack the Gatekeeper and instead stand idle. If this happens:

• Wait for one hour (using the game’s wait function).
  This should reset the scene and allow the battle to proceed.

Once the fight begins, the Gatekeeper will effortlessly slaughter the entire group. Afterward, speak to Shelden again, and he’ll mention that Jayred Ice-Veins has a plan to kill the Gatekeeper.

Step 3: Meeting Jayred Ice-Veins and Visiting the Gardens of Flesh and Bone

Return to Passwall and locate Jayred Ice-Veins inside a rundown building near the pond. He’ll explain that the Gatekeeper can only be killed using special arrows made from the bones of a previous Gatekeeper.
Follow Jayred to the Gardens of Flesh and Bone, a gruesome area filled with corpses. Use a lockpick to open the Very Easy-level gate and enter the courtyard. Interact with the Gatekeeper Skeleton to trigger an ambush.

Possible Bug Fix:

If Jayred doesn’t move or react after entering the gardens:

• Wait for one hour to progress the quest.

Once you activate the skeleton, a horde of Shambles (undead creatures) will attack. Defeat them, and Jayred will use the skeleton to craft Gatekeeper Bone Arrows.

Step 4: Crafting the Gatekeeper Bone Arrows

After clearing the Shambles, Jayred will need three in-game hours to finish the arrows. You can:

• Wait using the wait function.
• Leave and return later.

Once the arrows are ready, return to Jayred’s house in Passwall to collect them.

Step 5: Killing the Gatekeeper

Now that you have the Gatekeeper Bone Arrows, return to the Gates of Madness. The Gatekeeper is still invincible to normal attacks, but these arrows will bypass its defenses.

Pro Tip:

If you wait for Jayred to accompany you, he’ll help attack the Gatekeeper, making the fight much easier.

Once the Gatekeeper is dead, loot its body to obtain:

• The Key to Mania
• The Key to Dementia

These keys allow you to enter either side of the Shivering Isles (Mania, thevibrant and chaotic region, or Dementia, the dark and twisted one).

Step 6: Completing Through the Fringe of Madness

After defeating the Gatekeeper, Haskill (Sheogorath’s chamberlain) will appear and inform you that the Mad God wishes to speak with you. You can now enter either:

• The Gate of Mania (recommended for an easier path)
• The Gate of Dementia

Make your way to Bliss, Sheogorath’s palace, and speak to him to complete the quest.

Final Tips & Warnings

• Save Frequently: The Shivering Isles is full of bugs, so saving before major events (like the Gatekeeper fight) is wise.
• Mania vs. Dementia: Choosing Mania first leads to a slightly easier experience, but both paths eventually converge.
• Gatekeeper Bone Arrows: These are unique—don’t lose them!
