How To Get Better Prices in Oblivion Remastered

The vast and immersive world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered offers adventurers a treasure trove of items to discover, from powerful weapons and gleaming armor to rare ingredients and valuable artifacts. However, this abundance can quickly lead to a common frustration: inventory management. The dreaded notification of being over-encumbered can halt even the most thrilling expedition. Fortunately, Oblivion Remastered provides players with tools and strategies to effectively manage their inventory and maximize their carrying capacity. While our previous guide focused on increasing carry weight, this article will delve into another crucial aspect of inventory management: the art of haggling, which directly impacts how much value you can extract from your loot and how efficiently you can acquire new gear.

The Art of Persuasion: Mastering the Haggle in Oblivion Remastered

Unlike some role-playing games where haggling occurs on an item-by-item basis or during the final checkout, Oblivion Remastered employs a unique system where players negotiate the overall percentage value at which items will be bought and sold with a merchant before any transaction takes place. This means you're establishing a profit margin for your sales and a discount for your purchases for the entire interaction.
To initiate the haggling process in Oblivion Remastered, ensure that the merchant's inventory is currently selected (not your own). Then, press the designated button:
  • X on Xbox consoles.
  • Square on PlayStation consoles.
  • R on PC.

This action will bring up a slider, which will initially be positioned at the far left. Your objective is to manipulate this slider as far to the right as possible. A higher position on the right signifies that you will buy goods from the trader at lower prices and sell your own items to them at higher prices, maximizing your profit and minimizing your expenses.
After adjusting the slider to your desired position, press the "Continue" button to see the potential price changes reflected in the merchant's inventory. Be aware that very cheap items, such as individual arrows, might only show a price change after significant haggling due to rounding mechanics.
While the slider allows for a wide range of values, it's crucial to understand that simply setting it to the far right does not guarantee the merchant's acceptance. The slider is visually divided, with the left side labeled "Easy" and the right side labeled "Hard." This designation reflects the likelihood of the merchant agreeing to your proposed terms. The further you push the slider to the "Hard" side, the less inclined the trader will be to accept the deal. The success of your haggling attempt is determined by two key factors:
  • Mercantile Skill: Your Mercantile skill level plays a significant role in your haggling prowess. If your Mercantile skill is higher than the merchant's (their skill level is displayed above the slider), you have a much greater chance of a successful negotiation. A skilled negotiator is more persuasive and can secure better deals.
  • Disposition: The merchant's opinion of your character, known as their Disposition, also heavily influences their willingness to agree to your terms. This value ranges from 0 to 100 and is displayed on the haggling screen. A higher Disposition indicates that the merchant likes your character and is therefore more likely to accept a favorable deal. Building positive relationships with merchants through quests, successful persuasion attempts, and generally agreeable behavior can significantly improve your haggling outcomes.

Considering these two factors, players must strategically decide how far to pushtheir luck with the slider. If you are dealing with a merchant who is an Expert in Mercantile and has a low Disposition (below 50, for example), it is generally wise to aim for a less aggressive position on theslider to increase the chances of acceptance. You will only know if your haggling deal has been accepted when you attempt to buy or sell anitem.

If your proposed deal is deemed too unfavorable by the merchant, they will refuse to conduct the transaction. The game will display an "OfferRefused" message at the top of the screen, and the NPC will often voicetheir displeasure. In such a scenario, you will need to re-enter thehaggling interface and propose a less demanding offer. It's important to note that each failed haggling attempt will slightly decrease thetrader's Disposition towards your character, making future negotiationswith that merchant potentially more challenging.

The ability to haggle effectively is directly tied to your Mercantile skill, which governs your trading abilities. As your Mercantile skillincreases, you will gain access to better items and more favorable baseprices from merchants. You can improve your Mercantile skill by engaging in buying and selling transactions and by seeking out trainers who canoffer specialized instruction. Players familiar with the original Oblivion should note a significant improvement: you no longer need to sell items individually to level up Mercantile quickly. Experience gains are nowbased on the total amount of gold involved in a transaction, making theprocess much more efficient.

Finally, your Personality Attribute plays a passive but crucial role in securing better prices. A higherPersonality score will generally lead to merchants having a higherinitial Disposition towards your character. This positive initialimpression makes them more receptive to your haggling attempts, ultimately helping you secure more advantageous deals.

By understanding and mastering the art of haggling in Oblivion Remastered, players can significantly improve their financial standing, acquirebetter gear at lower costs, and ultimately alleviate the burden ofinventory management by maximizing the value of their hard-earned loot. So, hone your persuasive skills, build rapport with merchants, andbecome a shrewd negotiator in the bustling marketplaces of Cyrodiil.
