The arsenal of Samus Aran is defined by its versatile energy weapons, and in Metroid Prime 4, the Thunder Shot is the final, essential piece of the elemental puzzle. This powerful beam upgrade is not merely a combat enhancement; it is critical for progression, as it allows players to neutralize specific barriers and energize inert machinery, opening new paths through the complex world of the game.Without the Thunder Shot, certain areas remain perpetually blocked, preventing players from reaching the climactic finale. This guide details the step-by-step process for obtaining this vital power-up, from fulfilling the prerequisites to locating the hidden component and finalizing the upgrade.(A minor spoiler note: For players who wish to minimize narrative spoilers, be aware that the pursuit of the Thunder Shot only begins after successfully defeating the boss encounter located at the end of the Flare Pool zone.)

Metroid Prime 4: Get Past Thunder Blockers

Phase 1: Necessary Prerequisites for the Hunt

To even begin the quest for the Thunder Shot, Samus must first acquire several key movement and combat abilities. These prior upgrades are essential for navigating the complex terrain that guards the Thunder Chip.

1. Unlocking Key Modes

Players must ensure they have unlocked the following movement and manipulation tools:

  • Psychic Boost Ball: Required to access the necessary pathways leading to the Thunder Chip's location.
  • Vi-O-La IC Mode: This mode is accessed after defeating the boss Keratos in the Ice Belt area. It is necessary to safely traverse hazardous environments, notably crossing the lava pool and gaining entry to the Flare Poolfacility.

2. Earning the Grapple Upgrade

  • Defeating Phenoros: Successfully navigate the Flare Pool facility and defeat the area's main boss, Phenoros.
  • Reward: This victory grants Samus the Psychic Grapple upgrade, a movement tool that is foundational to reaching the Thunder Chip.

Phase 2: Locating the Thunder Chip in Volt Forge

The crucial component for the Thunder Shot—the Thunder Chip—is hidden deep within the Volt Forge area, a location only accessible with the Psychic Grapple.

1. Journey to Volt Forge

  • Entry Point: Return to the Volt Forge region.
  • Descent: Use the newly acquired Psychic Grapple to descend through Tower 1 until you locate a specific landmark: the Collapsed Catwalk.
  • Navigation: While the map may show this area as unexplored, the presence of thestructural damage makes the Collapsed Catwalk a noticeable point ofinterest.

2. The Grapple Lasso Solution

  • Crossing the Gap: Once at the Collapsed Catwalk, utilize the Psychic Grapple to bridge the gap and safely cross the room.
  • Following the Path: Continue along the linear path until you arrive at a large chamber housing multiple Lamorn power cells.
  • The Damaged Cell: Look toward the west side of this room. You will notice a power cell that is visibly malfunctioning.
  • Accessing the Chip:

    • First, use Samus's Scan Visor on the damaged cover plate of the power cell.
    • Once scanned, employ the Grapple Lasso ability to forcibly tear the damaged cover away.

Removing the cover grants access to the concealed Thunder Chip. Players can now interact with the object to collect it and prepare for the final stage of the upgrade.

Note on Internal Security: Be advised that acquiring the Thunder Chip often triggers an immediate security response, resulting in a boss battle occurring within the power cell room.

Phase 3: Finalizing the Thunder Shot Upgrade

With the component secured, the final step is a familiar one, involving atrip back to the technician who handles Samus’s elemental modifications.

1. The Expert’s Workshop

  • Destination: Travel back to the Fury Green area and locate the NPC specialist, Myles.
  • The Conversion: Handing the collected Thunder Chip over to Myles initiates the conversion process. Myles will integratethe component into Samus’s weapon system, transforming the chip into the powerful Thunder Shot.

2. Immediate Deployment

  • Assignment: The Thunder Shot is automatically assigned to the directional controls(d-pad), joining the previously acquired Ice Shot and Fire Shot, completing the elemental triumvirate.
  • Testing: An excellent place to immediately test the Thunder Shot is in the Fury Green elemental lock puzzle, located just a few rooms away from Myles. Here, you can experience the new ability to neutralize Thunder Blockers and power dormant mechanisms that once barred your path.

The Thunder Shot is now an integral part of Samus's armory, unlocking the remaining regions of Metroid Prime 4 and ensuring the path to the game's ultimate objective is clear.
