The Last of Us Part II Remastered has finally arrived on PC, bringing its acclaimed detail and emotional narrative to a new platform. However, unlike its PlayStation 5 counterpart, the PC version has been plagued by some frustrating bugs, with the "autosave not working" issue being a particularly impactful one. If you're encountering this problem and losing precious gameplay progress, you've come to the right place. This guide will explain the issue and provide several workarounds to help you minimize the damage and potentially prevent it from happening again.

Fix Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Autosave Not Working

The Nightmare of Lost Progress: Understanding the Autosave Bug

Losing hours of hard-earned progress is every gamer's worst fear, and unfortunately, many players in The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC are experiencing this firsthand. Reports indicate that significant chunks of gameplay are being lost due to a bug where the game attempts to autosave but gets stuck indefinitely on the message: "autosaving still in progress, please wait…".

When this occurs, the manual save option often becomes unusable as well, leaving players in a frustrating limbo. In most instances, the only way to proceed is to force-close the game and restart, inevitably leading to lost progress. However, there are steps you can take to mitigate this loss using the game's backup save system.

Is There an Official Fix Yet?

As of now (Monday, April 7, 2025), an official patch or solution directly addressing this autosave bug in The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC has not been released by the developers. Therefore, players are currently reliant on community-discovered workarounds to manage and potentially avoid this issue.

Workarounds to Minimize Progress Loss and Potential Fixes:

If you've already encountered the "autosaving still in progress" bug, unfortunately, there's no way to recover the unsaved progress within that frozen state. You will need to force-close the game using the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). This will result in the loss of your progress since the last successful save. After restarting the game, try the following workarounds:

  • Verify Integrity of Game Files via Steam:

    • Go to your Steam Library.
    • Right-click on The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
    • Select Properties.
    • Navigate to the Installed Files tab.
    • Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
    • Steam will scan your game files and redownload any that are missing or corrupted.
    • After the verification process is complete, launch the game to see if the autosave issue persists. If not, your recent saves might be recovered. If the problem continues, try the next workaround.
  • Attempt Manual Saving (Even When Bugged):

    • Although many players report that manual saving is disabled when the autosave bug occurs, it's still worth trying to manually save your progress before you force-quit the game. If you are lucky and the manual save function is still accessible, you can at least preserve your progress up to that point.
  • Utilize Backup Save Files:

    • The game automatically creates backup saves at regular intervals. These backups can be a lifesaver in recovering some of your lost progress. To access and use these backup files:
      • Open File Explorer.
      • Navigate to the following directory: C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Documents\The Last of Us Part II
      • Open the folder with a combination of numbers and letters. This folder contains your save files.
      • Inside this folder, you should find a series of backup files with extensions like .0A_bak0, .0A_bak1, up to .0A_bak10.
      • The backup file with the lowest number (.0A_bak0) is typically the most recent backup save.
      • To restore from a backup:
        • Identify the latest backup file. For example, USR-DATA.0A_bak1.
        • Copy this backup file.
        • Paste the copied file into the SAVEFILE0A folder (located in the same directory as the backup files).
        • Rename the pasted file by removing the .0A_bak[number] part of the extension. For example, if the backup file was named USR-DATA.0A_bak1, rename it to simply USR-DATA. This will overwrite the potentially corrupted current save file.
        • Launch the game to check how much of your progress has been recovered.
  • Run Steam in Offline Mode (Potential Prevention):

    • Some players have found that running Steam in Offline Mode can prevent the autosave issue from occurring. It's speculated that the bug might be related to Steam Cloud Saves. To try this:
      • Open Steam.
      • Click on the "Steam" option in the top-left corner.
      • Select "Go Offline...".
      • Click "Go Offline" in the confirmation window.
      • Launch The Last of Us Part II Remastered while Steam is in offline mode.
      • Continue playing the story. You might notice that the autosave feature works correctly in offline mode.
      • You can also continue to manually save your game while offline.
      • When you decide to go back online, Steam should prompt you to sync your offline saves with Steam Cloud Saves, allowing for a smooth transition.
  • Practice Regular Manual Saving:

    • Since the autosave issue can strike at any point, it's highly recommended to make a habit of manually saving your progress frequently. Saving every 10-15 minutes can significantly minimize the amount of progress you lose if the bug occurs. Relying solely on autosave is risky given the current state of the game.
  • Check Your Drive Space:

    • Although less likely to be the primary cause of a specific autosave bug, ensure that the storage drive where the game saves your progress (typically the C: drive) has sufficient free space. A full or nearly full drive can sometimes lead to unexpected issues with saving data.

  • The autosave not working issue in The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC is a frustrating problem that can lead to significant progress loss. While an official fix is awaited, the workarounds outlined above can help you recover some lost progress through backup saves and potentially prevent the issue from recurring by running Steam in offline mode and practicing diligent manual saving. Stay vigilant, save often, and hopefully, the developers will release a patch to address this bug soon, allowing for a smoother and more reliable gameplay experience.
