Death Stranding 2, Sam Porter Bridges is tasked with delivering delicate and crucial cargo across a vast and often perilous map. While the backpack is essential for carrying these goods, it can become a significant liability in combat situations, affecting Sam's mobility and stealth. A heavy load makes Sam slower, louder, and more conspicuous, which is far from ideal when facing enemies or BTs.To maximize your effectiveness in combat scenarios, dropping your backpack can be a game-changer. It allows Sam to move with much greater speed and agility, and significantly improves his stealth capabilities.
Death Stranding 2: How To Drop Backpack
While it's not strictly necessary to drop your backpack, doing so will make your combat encounters much smoother. There are two primary methods to drop your backpack:
Method 1: Via the Cargo MenuPress and hold the Up arrow key on the D-pad. This action will bring up a selection wheel, displaying various cargo management options. On the selection wheel, use the right stick to navigate and select the "Offload Backpack" option. This option is typically the first one in the counter-clockwise direction (upper-left section) of the radial menu.Once "Offload Backpack" is highlighted, press the X button to confirm your selection. Sam will then carefully set his backpack down.Method 2: Quick Method (Hold Triangle)Simply press and hold the Triangle key. This is the quickest way to drop your backpack without navigating through any menus. Sam will instantly set his backpack onto the floor.Once the backpack is on the floor, Sam gains significantly improved mobility and stealth. He can run faster, turn more quickly, and is much harder for enemies to spot, especially in tall grass or behind cover. This also has the benefit of protecting your cargo, as hits taken without the backpack on your back cannot damage its contents or scatter them.
Picking Your Backpack Back Up:
- To retrieve your backpack, simply walk over to it and press the Triangle button. Sam will pick it back up and reposition it on his back.
Additional Tip: Securing Your CargoFor situations where you might leave your backpack for longer periods or simply want to better protect your cargo from damage, Death Stranding 2 introduces a "Strand" tool mechanic. After dropping your backpack (using either method above):
Equip the Strand tool (found under "Special Tools" in the radial menu, accessed by holding the Right D-pad button).Approach your dropped backpack.Hold L2 to prepare the tool, then press R2 when prompted. Sam will perform an animation to tie all the cargotogether, making it much more stable and less prone to scattering ordamage from falls or impacts. This also works for cargo placed onfloating carriers. Platform(s): PlayStation 5 PS5
