It’s always the case that when Microsoft and Sony release their consoles, they go head to head in the battle of sales and popularity. And, after the successful launches of the Xbox Series X and the PS5, it’s been the case once again. However, does their ongoing rivalry spell the end of mobile gaming?

One thing is for sure, in terms of purpose-built games consoles, the Series X and PS5 are unrivalled. They outperform and surpass any other console on the market, and this very much puts them in a league of their own with gamers. Yes, you can enjoy excellent gaming experiences on PC, but you must take into account that computers aren't portable. At the same time, you could take a console away with you on a business trip, for example, or on holiday, if you’re that way inclined.

However, this brings us immediately to one of the reasons why mobile gaming isn’t a thing of the past. Instead, it still represents the future of gaming in the eyes of many. For example, suppose you game on your smartphone device. In that case, it means that you can play whenever you like and from wherever you are, even if an internet connection is required, thanks to in-built Wi-Fi capabilities and mobile data connections.

But, another massive positive where mobile gaming is concerned is that there are bespoke games designed for the smaller screen. For example, can you imagine playing titles such as Pokemon GO on console or PC? It’s impossible. And other games like Clash of Clans and Angry Birds. They’re made for mobile. It’s where they made their name, and they look and play exceptionally well on smartphones and tablets.

What mobile gaming also does is open the door for types of gaming to become convenient and allow players to access them on-demand. Casino apps for your phone are a prime example, as they allow gamers to enjoy content such as roulette and blackjack, without being tied to a PC, which is always going to remain in the one place. Instead, they can get their mobile out of their pocket and begin playing straight away.

Technology is evolving all the time, and while consoles from the likes of Microsoft and Sony really manage to take gaming to the next level, mobile developers such as Apple and Samsung continue to close the gap. A lot of games playable on high-end devices are akin to what you expect to see on some handheld consoles, which ultimately means the gaming experience is continuing to improve.

While smartphones may never hit the same levels as top of the range games consoles, you could say they don’t need to. The market is big enough for consoles, PC gaming and mobile gaming. The progression of one will never mean the end for another. And, if anything, it’s mobile gaming that continues to grow in popularity the fastest.
