In the demanding real-time strategy game StarCraft 2, every second counts. The differences across races cause drastically diverse construction orders from the very beginning, even if they all start off the same.

In StarCraft 2, your starting strategy will determine whether you're favored to win or left lagging behind an unfavored opponent. This is the optimal build order for the initial few minutes of each game, as the Zerg have a distinct build order that demands swift actions at the outset.

Best Zerg Build Order in StarCraft 2

The Zerg are at their best when they play aggressively; the aim is to control the map with creep and crush your enemies with sheer numbers, regardless of how tiny their units are. While growing at a reasonable pace, the initial few minutes of the game will center on laying the groundwork for a solid economy.
  • Construct a drone right away; make a second one second after you gather the necessary minerals.
  • Construct an Overlord with the minerals you acquire after the second drone.
  • If you want to avoid running out of command, gather minerals for a Spawning Pool and then get a drone to replace the one you lost.
  • After the Overlord is finished, construct a second drone. Then, begin saving 300 minerals. In the next closed base position, construct your second hatchery.
  • Once your spawning pool is full, construct two additional drones and then a queen.
  • The next step is to construct a Vespene Geyser, then another Drone, and finally an Overlord.
  • Prior to flooding the Gyser with Drones and constructing three extra Drones to substitute those, construct two sets of Zerglings to serve as supplementary defense.
  • Construct a queen and two drones for the second Hatchery; it should be ready by now.
  • Obtain two Evolution Chambers to complete the upgrade to a liar for your primary base.

Much of this will fall into place as you become accustomed to the schedule. Here, you'll have a lot more leeway in choose how to move forward, thanks to the Liar's generous troop options. You can also prioritize Zerglings and Banelings, but you'll need to start upgrading your speed immediately if you do. There are a lot more things that the Zerg can build, but this is a basic sequence to start the game.

What You Need to Construct a Zerg in StarCraft 2

Many of the Zerg-morphable structures rely on whether you possess a Hatchery, Liar, or Hive. All the structures it unlocks, as well as those preceding it, will be accessible so long as it is alive. When all the conditions are satisfied, you, the Zerg, can morph your main base by picking the structure and then the option on the bottom right. You can morph the following buildings with each main base:

The Zerg are a versatile race capable of adapting to a variety of situations. Their units and structures can be used to overwhelm opponents with overwhelming numbers, harass them with constant pressure, or defend their base with powerful defenses.

The Zerg start the game with a Hatchery, which is their main building. From there, they can build a Spawning Pool to train Zerglings and Roaches. The Spawning Pool also allows them to research upgrades for these units.

Once the Zerg have a Spawning Pool, they can build an Evolution Chamber to research upgrades for their Zerglings and Roaches. The Evolution Chamber also allows them to research the ability to transform Zerglings into Banelings.

The Zerg can also build a Roach Warren to train Roaches. The Roach Warren allows them to research upgrades for their Roaches, as well as the ability to transform Roaches into Ravagers.

The Zerg can build a Hydralisk Den to train Hydralisks. The Hydralisk Den allows them to research upgrades for their Hydralisks, as well as the ability to transform Hydralisks into Lurkers.

The Zerg can build an Infestation Pit to train Mutalisks. The Infestation Pit allows them to research upgrades for their Mutalisks, as well as the ability to transform Mutalisks into Corruptors.

The Zerg can build a Spire to train Guardians. The Spire allows them to research upgrades for their Guardians, as well as the ability to transform Guardians into Brood Lords.

The Zerg can build a Nydus Network to transport units quickly across the map. The Nydus Network can also be used to attack enemy bases from unexpected locations.

The Zerg can build a Hive to train Ultralisks. The Hive allows them to research upgrades for their Ultralisks.

The Zerg can also build a Lair to research advanced technologies. The Lair allows them to research upgrades for their units and structures, as well as the ability to build more advanced structures.

The Zerg's ability to adapt and evolve is a key aspect of their strategy. Here's a breakdown of the unit and structure requirements, categorized by their role in the game:

Early Game:

  • 150 Minerals, 100 Vespene Gas: Spawning Pool & Hatchery
  • These core structures are essential for producing basic Zerg units like Zerglings and Roaches. The Hatchery allows for expansion and additional resource gathering, while the Spawning Pool is the birthplace of the Zerg army.

Mid Game:

  • 200 Minerals, 150 Vespene Gas: Hydralisk Den (unlocks Lurker Den), Infestation Pit, Spire, Nydus Network
  • The Hydralisk Den produces versatile units like Hydralisks and Lurkers, which excel in both melee and ranged combat. The Infestation Pit allows for the creation of powerful units like Mutalisks and Corruptors, which dominate the air. The Spire is a crucial structure for aerial dominance, while the Nydus Network enables rapid deployment of units across the map.

Late Game:

  • [Mineral & Gas Cost] Ultralisk Cavern
  • The Ultralisk Cavern produces the formidable Ultralisk, a heavily armored unit capable of devastating enemy forces. This unit, along with a well-developed army of other units, can be used to overwhelm opponents and secure victory.

You should definitely mutate additional Hives and Liars as the game goes on. Having just one in your primary base may be disastrous if it gets destroyed and you have to start over.
