In this latest entry to the Silent Hill series, the game shifts its focus from the familiar American setting to a rural, folkloric Japan. While the game still maintains the unnerving, psychological horror that defines the series, this change in location deeply influences the gameplay, introducing a new system of character progression tied to Japanese spiritual practices. In
Silent Hill f, you can upgrade your core stats—Health, Stamina, and Sanity—as well as increase the number of Omamori slots you have. To do so, you'll need two main resources:
Faith and
Ema Plates. Faith is gained by enshrining items at a Hokora (a small shrine), while Ema Plates are the physical tokens used to write your prayers for improvement. Every upgrade costs one Ema Plate, regardless of how much Faith it requires, so don't worry about saving them for more "expensive" upgrades.Ema Plates are a finite resource in any given playthrough. There are a total of
12 Ema Plates to be found during your first run, which is enough to fully upgrade two of your core stats or distribute the upgrades more evenly among them. Any Ema Plates you don't use are carried over to New Game Plus, where you can find even more to continue your upgrades.
