Why You Should Hunt Ankou Rifts: The Dark Katana
The primary incentive for seeking out these treacherous trials is the Dark Katana. Each successfully completed Ankou Rift rewards you with a fragment of this powerful blade. Once you have collected every last piece, you will reforge the Dark Katana, allowing you to wield it as a permanent replacement for Joe Musashi’s standard Oborozuki sword. This weapon is not merely a cosmetic change; it is a symbol of mastery and a key tool for the most dedicated shinobi.
Essential Preparation: Gear Up First!
Before you begin your hunt, a word of caution: do not attempt this collectible run without first acquiring all of Joe’s core Ningi tools. Many rifts are strategically placed in areas that are utterly impossible to reach without the full suite of mobility upgrades. Ensure you have the following abilities at your disposal:
- Ninja Claws for scaling specific walls.
- Ninja Hook for grappling to distant points.
- Glider for crossing vast gaps and navigating complex terrain.
- Sword Dive for smashing through barriers and accessing lower areas.
Attempting to find rifts without these tools will only lead to frustration.
Detailed Ankou Rift Locations
1. Oboro Village
From the Attic shrine, navigate to the large chamber with the burning floor. Descend to the very bottom and seek out a concealed Yokai Barrier. Your Sword Dive is the key to shattering this barrier and revealing the hidden path to the rift.
2. The Mountain
This rift requires a significant vertical ascent. Begin at the Waterfalls shrine and progress until you unlock the entrance to the main facility. Instead of heading inward, use your Ninja Claws to scale the wall on your right. Follow this linear upward path; it will lead you to a secluded secret zone. The rift awaits at the summit.
3. Lantern Festival
Situated between the Buildings and Fireworks shrines, this rift is one of themore straightforward ones to locate. While still hidden, the path isless convoluted than others, making it a good early target if you havethe necessary gear.
4. Neo City
Travel to the West District shrine, notable for the massive SEGA billboardoverhead. From this point, head relentlessly to the left. You willdiscover an alternate route leading to a secret area brimming withcollectibles. Your goal is the very top of this zone.
5. Fish Market
This rift is cleverly hidden near the Containers shrine. Double back fromthe shrine and work your way to the upper-right section of the previousroom. This leads to a new area with a complex platforming challenge. Asyou ascend, you will encounter a series of hanging containers used forsliding. Instead of riding the last one down, leap from it to the rightto find the rift entrance.
6. Submarine Base
Located in close proximity to the Floor B3 shrine, this rift is at the end of a demanding obstacle course. It is highly recommended to complete thelevel's main objective first before backtracking with all your tools totackle this challenging arena.
7. The Desert
One of the most complex rifts to find. From the Astral Ruins shrine, leapfrom the left side and use your Glider to reach a tunnel leading to theAstral Labyrinth. This area is a multi-layered maze where you mustlocate and strike energy crystals to disable barriers blocking yourpath. The Ankou Rift is housed in a distinct square-shaped room in thelower-middle section of this labyrinth.
8. Mad Train
A welcome reprieve! The rift on the Mad Train level is arguably theeasiest to find. Simply fast-travel to the Convoy shrine and proceed tothe left. It is conveniently located in a small alcove just past a minor gap.
9. ENE Corp Laboratory
This rift is the community's final frontier. Current intelligence suggestsit is locked within the chamber beneath the Containment Room shrine.Access appears to be gated behind a terminal that requires all 6 Laboratory Keys collected from other missions. Full confirmation is pending, but this is the most reliable lead.
10. The Kaiju
Play through the level until you reach the Second Stomach shrine. From here, eliminate the organic matter obstructing the large chasm to the left of the save point. Carefully glide down the left-hand wall, meticulouslyavoiding the deadly spikes, to locate the final rift.
Pro Tip: Completion is only half the battle. The obstacle courses inside areextremely demanding. Practice your moves, be patient, and you will berewarded with the might of the Dark Katana. Happy hunting, shinobi!
