The Chronicle update for Phasmophobia has significantly changed how evidence is collected, placing a new emphasis on audio and video recordings. This overhaul encourages players to fill their journal with various media types, offering greater rewards for a "Perfect Investigation." If you're new to these evidence types or looking to refine your technique, here’s a detailed guide on how to record audio and video evidence in Phasmophobia.
How to Get Audio Evidence in Phasmophobia
Audio evidence can only be captured using the
Sound Recorder in Phasmophobia. To record this evidence in your journal, you need to be holding an active Sound Recorder and press the record button when a capturable sound occurs. This process requires some practice, but here's a breakdown:
Get a Sound Recorder: Any of the three Tiers for the Sound Recorder will work. Higher Tiers generally make it easier to detect and capture sounds due to improved range or visual indicators. The Sound Recorder becomes available from Level 4, with Tier 2 and Tier 3 unlocking at later levels.Load into a Contract: Audio evidence can be captured in all gameplay modes. If you're practicing, consider a custom game with the "friendly ghost" option to experiment without immediate danger. Avoid challenge modes unless you know a Sound Recorder is included in the specific loadout. Turn the Sound Recorder On: Activate the Sound Recorder using your Primary Use button (usually Right-Click on PC, or the equivalent button on your controller). You'll see the device illuminate or show a display to indicate it's active.Hold Down the Primary Use Button to Record: The Sound Recorder is always listening when active, but it only captures evidence when you actively record. To begin recording, hold down the same Primary Use button you used to turn it on. - Visual Cue: On Tier I, lights will indicate sound strength; aim for the green zone. On Tier II, a waveform will appear. On Tier III, a stereo bar and directional indicator help pinpoint the source. A sound needs to be louder than a certain threshold (e.g., above -12 dB for Tier 3) to be recorded.
- Auditory Cue: You might hear a "scratchy" or "static" sound through the recorder when it detects a capturable noise.
Release the Record Button When Done: Continue holding the button as long as there's sound to pick up. Once the sound subsides or you've captured what you need, release the Primary Use button to stop recording.Check Your Journal for Audio Evidence: All captured Audio evidence is stored on the third evidence page, labeled "Media – Audio." You can play back your recordings and review the official label to see what you've captured. - Storage Limit: You can store up to three unique pieces of Audio evidence at once. If you need to record more, you may need to delete older recordings by selecting the small trashcan bin icon next to them in the journal.
When Can You Capture Audio Evidence in Phasmophobia?
To capture rewarding audio evidence, you need to record moments when the ghost actively makes noise. Here are common instances:
- During Ghost Events: All ghost events generate capturable noises, such as the ghost singing, screaming, stomping, breaking lights, or manifesting audibly.
- Spirit Box Responses: When a ghost responds to the Spirit Box, you can record this audio. This can be tricky solo as you juggle both devices.
- Parabolic Microphone Responses: While the Parabolic Microphone itself is missing from some challenges, any significant sound it would pick up that indicates ghost presence(like whispers, groans, or distant interactions) can often be recordedby the Sound Recorder if you are in range.
- During Ghost Hunts: Capturing the sounds of a hunting ghost (footsteps, growls, whispers) is possible but extremely dangerous.
- Whenever the Sound Recorder Picks Up Noise: The Sound Recorder can sometimes detect noises you can't hear with your bare ears. When you see the indicator on the device spike, try to getcloser to the noise source and start recording.
- Other Ghost Noises: Keep your Sound Recorder on and ready to go for any unexpected ghostsounds, such as whispers, groans, laughter, or sounds of objects beingmanipulated.
How to Get Video Evidence in Phasmophobia
Video evidence can be captured using Video Cameras placed on the map or by reviewing live footage from the truck's CCTV system. You can capture up to five unique video clips per investigation.
Capturing Video Evidence from the Truck:
In the truck, navigate to the CCTV monitor.Cycle through the camera feeds (Video Cameras, Head Cameras, fixed CCTV cameras). When you see a ghost interaction or event on a feed that qualifies as video evidence, select the REC button near the bottom left corner of the screen.A red dot icon with "REC" will appear in the top right corner of the video feed, indicating that recording is active.Capturing Video Evidence While Holding a Video Camera:
Equip a Video Camera. When a visible ghost interaction or event occurs, point the camera at it.Hold down the Primary Use button (same as for the Sound Recorder).Visual Cue: A rectangular frame and text highlighting what you're capturing willappear on the camera's mini-screen or your HUD. This indicates that thefootage is valid for evidence.Once you see these markers, you can release the button. The recording will automatically save to your journal. When Can You Capture Video Evidence in Phasmophobia?
You can capture video evidence whenever the ghost performs an action that can be visually observed. Key instances include:
- Ghost Appearances: Videoing any manifestation of the ghost (physical model, shadow form, DOTS ghost, spectral apparition).
- Ghost Interactions with Equipment or Items:
- Doors opening, closing, or shaking.
- Objects being thrown (capturing the movement).
- Lights flickering or light sources shattering.
- The ghost extinguishing a Firelight or candle.
- Objects like rocking chairs moving, pianos playing, or phones ringing.
- Ghost Writing appearing in a book (capturing the moment it writes).
- A Crucifix actively burning.
- Dirty Water appearing in a sink.
- Motion sensors being triggered.
- During Ghost Hunts: Videoing the ghost as it moves during a hunt is possible but extremely risky.
- During Ghost Events: Capturing any visual aspect of a ghost event (e.g., the ghostappearing, throwing multiple objects, or performing its unique eventanimation).
- Ghost Orbs: These floating orbs are visible only through video cameras (andsometimes head cams) and are a primary target for video evidence.
