In
Path of Exile 2, your character's skills are the foundation of your build, and Support Gems are the key to customizing their functionality. Many support gems are a strategic trade-off, and the Multishot gem is a perfect example, sacrificing some raw power for incredible crowd control. If you're looking for the Scattershot support gem, you won't find it under that name. This guide will show you how to get the new
Multishot support gem and explain its effects on your projectile-based build.
How to Get Multishot (Formerly Scattershot)
The reason players are no longer able to find the Scattershot support gem is that it has been officially renamed to
Multishot. This name change is part of the game's new, more streamlined gem system.Multishot is a
Tier 1 Projectile support gem, making it a common find from monsters and quest rewards in the early game. To get it, you must find an
Uncut Support Gem and then use it at a Gemcutting station. At the station, you will be able to engrave it into the Multishot gem, which appears as a green icon in the menu.
- Requirements: To use the Multishot gem, your character needs a minimum of 5 Dexterity. This low requirement makes it accessible to virtually any bow, pistol, or other projectile-based build from the very start of the game.
- How to Find It: When you are at the Gemcutting station, the game may not automatically recommend Multishot for every projectile skill. To find it, be sure to select the "Show All" button to see a complete list of all support gems compatible with your skill.
Here are the base stats for the Multishot gem at Level 1:
- Supported skills fire two additional projectiles.
- Supported skills have 20% less Attack and Cast Speed.
- Supported skills deal 35% less Damage.
As you can see, this gem is a give-and-take, with a clear tradeoff between damage and the number of projectiles.
Is Multishot a Good Support Gem?
If you are just starting a new character, Multishot can be an excellent choice, but it is highly situational.
- For Clearing Mobs: Multishot shines in crowded situations. Against regular enemies in aninstance, firing two extra projectiles is far more effective forclearing packs than a single, more powerful attack. Pairing this gemwith a skill that has Pierce, which allows projectiles to pass throughmultiple enemies, can make your character an unstoppable force for crowd control.
- Against Bosses and Single Targets: Multishot is generally a poor choice for boss fights. The "less damage" modifier and "less skill speed" penalty will significantly reduce yoursingle-target DPS, as most skills will only be able to hit a singleenemy with one projectile from a single attack. You should considerswapping this gem out for a damage-focused support gem during bossencounters.
As you progress through the game and find higher-tier support gems, theeffects of Multishot will improve, reducing the damage penalty. However, its core function remains the same: it is a powerful utility gem forclearing screens of enemies, but it is not a direct damage upgrade forevery situation.
