In
Killing Floor 3, the traditional perk system has been completely revamped and replaced with
Specialists. This new system combines a specific character with a defined class role, providing a more structured and strategic approach to gameplay. Instead of a faceless class, you now choose a named character who comes with a unique set of abilities and a distinct personality.
Killing Floor 3: What are Specialists
Specialists are character-perk hybrids, each built around a specific playstyle and a team role. When you choose a Specialist, you're not just picking a set of stats; you're choosing a character with a unique identity and a dedicated purpose on the battlefield. Each Specialist comes with:
- A Pre-defined Role: Such as Commando, Medic, Sharpshooter, or Engineer.
- Unique Gadgets and Sidearms: Every Specialist has a unique sidearm and a powerful, role-defining gadget. For example, Foster the Commando has an acid-firing drone, while Imran the Engineer has a pair of shoulder-mounted soundwave turrets.
- A Detailed Skill Tree: As you play with a Specialist and earn XP, you unlock their unique skill tree. This allows for deep customization, with each Specialist having 30 levels and over 30 skill options. Many skills have multiple upgrade paths and can be upgraded up to three times, allowing you to fine-tune your build.
- Operational Budget: Leveling up your Specialist also increases your "operational budget," which lets you start a match with better weapons and tools.
While your Specialist defines your core role and abilities, the game also supports
cross-perk weapon customization. This means you are not restricted to only your Specialist's weapons and can adapt your loadout to what the situation or your team requires.
Launch Specialists
At launch, Killing Floor 3 features six unique Specialists, each offering a distinct playstyle:
- Foster (Commando): The classic all-around assault class. Foster is an expert with riflesand uses a drone for stealth Zed detection. His playstyle is focused onhigh DPS and versatility.

- Imran (Engineer): A support and demolition hybrid. Imran uses gadgets and turrets forarea control and zone defense. His playstyle is strategic, with a focuson crowd control and managing threats with his unique tools.
- Luna (Sharpshooter): A precision expert for high-value targets. Luna excels at long-rangecombat and landing precision headshots to take down large Zeds andbosses. Her gadget is an explosive homing arrow.
