The most straightforward way to acquire a shotgun is by progressing through the main story. A few hours into the game, during the mission "A New Strain," Kyle Crane will inevitably come across and take a shotgun from a scientist. This permanently adds the powerful weapon to your inventory, making it the most common way for players to get their first shotgun.

Looting from Human Enemies

After you complete the main story mission "Power Gambit,"human enemies will begin to appear more frequently throughout the world. Some of these enemies will be heavily armored and carry shotguns.
