The parkour system is a core part of the
Dying Light experience, and in
Dying Light: The Beast, it is once again elevated by the iconic
grappling hook. While this essential tool is not available from the start, it becomes a game-changer once you unlock it.
Dying Light The Beast: Unlock The Grappling Hook
In
Dying Light: The Beast, Kyle Crane begins his journey without most of his advanced parkour skills, including the grappling hook. This powerful tool is tied directly to the main storyline. To get it, you must complete the main campaign mission
"Some Like It Dark," which is approximately at the halfway point of the game's story.Upon completing this quest, you will be rewarded with the grappling hook, along with other items like a Survivor Spiked Glove, 10,000 XP, and some Old World Money.
How to Use the Grappling Hook
Once unlocked, the grappling hook is a versatile tool for bothtraversal and combat. You must first equip it in your inventory and then select it from your weapon wheel. To use it, simply aim at agrapple-able surface and press the designated tool button (LB on Xboxand L1 on PlayStation).
The grappling hook has two primary functions:
- Quick Pull: Tapping the tool button will cause Kyle to quickly pull himself towardthe surface. This is great for scaling buildings, crossing short gaps, and getting to a higher vantage point quickly.
- Swinging: Holding the tool button allows Kyle to swing from the rope, which isperfect for gaining incredible speed to cross wide gaps or navigatethrough the environment with a seamless flow. Be aware that each usedrains your stamina.
In combat, an upgraded grapplinghook can be used to pull enemies toward you, knocking them off balanceand setting them up for a follow-up attack.
How to Upgrade the Grappling Hook
To enhance the grappling hook's effectiveness, you can upgrade it at acrafting bench. The upgrade process is similar to other tools andrequires a specific type of Manual Page, which are found by exploring the world and looting certain locations, like the Brick School in the Golden Pine region.
The upgrade path for the grappling hook is as follows:
- Common to Rare: To achieve Rare status, you will need to use a Beginner Manual Page. This upgrade unlocks the ability to pull enemies toward you.
- Rare to Epic: To reach Epic status, you will need an Intermediate Manual Page. This upgrade unlocks the "Advanced Pull" skill, which further enhancesthe grappling hook's capabilities for both traversal and combat.
Upgrading the grappling hook as soon as you can is highly recommended, as itsignificantly improves your ability to navigate the world, evadeinfected, and control the flow of combat.
