Load your saved game.Open the pause menu by pressing the Options/Menu button on your controller or the Esc key on PC.Navigate to the 'Options' menu.At the very top of the first tab, you will see the difficulty selector. Here, you can toggle between the three available modes: Story, Survival, and Brutal. You can also set your preferred difficulty when starting a brand new game.
Dying Light: The Beast Difficulty Settings Explained
Each difficulty level significantly alters core gameplay mechanics, including enemy toughness, resource scarcity, and experience points (XP) gain. Choosing the right one is key to your enjoyment.
Story Mode (Easy)
Ideal for players who want to focus on the narrative and exploration without the constant threat of overwhelming danger. Story Mode is perfect for newcomers to the genre or those who prefer a more relaxed experience.
- Enemies & Combat: Zombies and human foes deal significantly less damage and are easier to defeat. Your stamina consumption for attacks and blocks is reduced, allowing for more liberal combat.
- Progression: The biggest benefit is that you do not lose any XP upon death, making it much easier to level up your character's skills.
- Resources & Gear: The world is abundant. You'll find crafting materials like feathers and chemicals more frequently and in larger quantities. Your weapons degrade slower, and armor provides enhanced protection, minimizing the grind for maintenance.
Survival Mode (Normal)
This is the developer-intended balance, offering a fair but substantialchallenge. Survival Mode provides a tense experience where resourcemanagement and smart combat are essential for success.
- Enemies & Combat: Enemies pose a credible threat. They can deal considerable damage, especially in groups, and require tactical engagement. Stamina costs are moderate, preventing you from spamming attacks without consequence.
- Progression: The standard rules apply: you will lose a portion of your XP when you die.
- Resources & Gear: Scavenging for materials becomes a core part of the gameplay. Resources are less common, requiring you to regularly repair weapons, craftitems, and upgrade your gear to keep pace with the rising enemy threat.
Brutal Mode (Hard)
Reserved for seasoned veterans seeking the ultimate test. Brutal Mode isunforgiving, demanding perfect parkour, precise combat, and meticulousplanning. Every mistake is heavily punished.
- Enemies & Combat: Foes are deadly from the start, dealing massive damage and evenadapting to your tactics to exploit weaknesses. Stamina regeneratesslowly, and every action has a high cost, forcing you to be deliberatewith every move.
- Progression: The risk is high, but so is the reward. While death causes a substantial XP penalty, you earn more XP from all activities and have a better chance of finding powerful, rare loot.
- Resources & Gear: The world is barren. Merchants have limited stock, and essentialresources are extremely scarce. Your armor is less effective, and weapon durability becomes a constant concern, making survival a true struggle.
Are There Difficulty-Linked Trophies or Achievements?
No. There is no trophy on PlayStation or achievement on Xbox for completing Dying Light: The Beast on any specific difficulty setting, includingBrutal mode.
This isexcellent news for players, as it means you can freely adjust thedifficulty at any point during your playthrough without worrying aboutlocking yourself out of the game's Platinum Trophy or full 1,000Gamerscore. Play the way that is most fun for you!
