How To Use A Survey Probe in Dune Awakening

The vast, faceless, and unforgiving desert of Arrakis can be an overwhelming expanse in Dune: Awakening. Yet, amidst the endless rocks and dunes, a crucial tool emerges to help players navigate and map out important landmarks: the Survey Probe. This handy item is introduced early in the Tutorial and proves invaluable for viewing significant locations throughout any given region.While a Survey Probe won't reveal every secret of Arrakis, it is instrumental in pinpointing critical points of interest such as Trading Posts, Imperial Testing Stations, and Moisture Caves. Players are specifically required to build and utilize a Survey Probe as part of the "A Touch of Civilization" quest, a foundational step within the extensive crafting chain that forms a core part of the game's early tutorial. Before you can even craft the Survey Probe, you'll first need to construct a Fabricator, a prerequisite from an earlier quest in this same chain.

• Initial Fabrication: The tutorial will walk you through the fabrication process for the Survey Probe itself. This is often one of the very first items you'll fabricate using your newly acquired Fabricator.
• The Launcher: Not only do you craft the Survey Probe, but you also need to craft a specialized device to launch it: the Survey Probe Launcher. Both the Survey Probe and its Launcher are constructed using the Fabricator, and each item typically requires one Copper Ingot as a material cost.
• Reusable Launcher: An excellent feature of the Survey Probe Launcher is that it is reusable. As long as your character's backpack remains intact and isn't consumed by a hungry sandworm, you can continue to use this single Launcher for all subsequent Survey Probes until you find an upgraded version or it requires repairs.

Deploying the Survey Probe effectively hinges on one crucial requirement: a high vantage point.

Mind the Stamina and Thirst Level

• Ideal Sites: The tall, rocky outcroppings and towering cliffs scattered throughoutthe desert make ideal sites for launching a Survey Probe, as they offerexpansive views.
• Hidden Dangers: However, just because sandworms can't reach these heights doesn't meanthey're free from peril. When scaling high cliffs, remember that yourcharacter is highly vulnerable to:
  • Sun Exposure: Prolonged time in direct sunlight rapidly depletes your hydration.
  • Thirst: Keep a close eye on your hydration meter.
  • Running Out of Stamina: Climbing consumes stamina. If your green stamina bar runs out whilescaling a cliff, you risk falling from a great height, which will almost certainly result in instant death.
• Survival Tips for Climbing:
  • Always find the shady side of rocks to minimize sun exposure and conserve hydration.
  • Bring a Blood Sack or other hydration sources (like a Hajra Literjon or your Stillsuit) to replenish thirst during or after the climb.
  • Conserve stamina by pausing your climb to let it regenerate, or by using items that boost stamina if you have them.
• Nighttime Scouting: The Survey Probe works just as effectively at night. Setting out for an evening climb is an excellent way to completely avoid the problem ofSun Exposure and drastically reduce your thirst depletion. As an addedbonus, traversing at night can also mean fewer Bandits and Scavengers to contend with, depending on your chosen location.

Launching the Probe and Studying the Map

Once you've reached a suitable high vantage point, the final steps are straightforward.

Reveals a Section of the Map

• Clear View Essential: Whatever high point you choose, ensure your view isn't blocked by other cliffs, rocks, or structures in every direction. A clear, unblockedpanoramic view is ideal for the probe to gather maximum data.
• Equip the Launcher:
• Open your Inventory.
• Place the Survey Probe Launcher onto one of the quickslots (typically slots 1 through 8) in the quick-select wheel.
• Select this quickslot to arm the probe Launcher.
• Aim In Any Direction: Unlike some other devices, the Survey Probe doesn't require preciseaiming. You can aim it in any direction. While your map might show apurple cone indicating your character's visual range, this is notdirectly connected to the probe's functionality. For those doing thetutorial, Zantara will likely offer some extra guidance during thisstep.
• Study the New Map Entries: After the probe is successfully launched, any new locations that itdetects within its radius will automatically appear on your map. Thismakes the Survey Probe an essential tool for traveling and exploring asefficiently as possible.
• "Survey Already Done" Message: If the probe only produces an error message stating "Survey alreadydone," it means there's nothing new to discover in that specific area,or that you have already successfully probed that section of the map.

What the Survey Probe Finds (and Doesn't Find)

• Detects: Trading Posts, Imperial Testing Stations, Moisture Caves, and general resources (both minerals and moisture).
• Does NOT Detect: The Survey Probe will not find certain perilous elements likesandworms, nor will it detect the presence of enemies within an area. It also does not detect specific quest items.

By effectively utilizing the Survey Probe, you gain a significantadvantage in charting the unpredictable desert of Arrakis, making yoursurvival, resource gathering, and questing far more manageable.
