In the glorious, retro-revived world of the
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake, battles often come down to a perfectly timed spell or a well-placed attack. However, true heroes know that sometimes the most potent weapon isn't a flaming sword or a divine spell, but a strategically used item. Whether you need a quick heal, a vital status cleanse, or a crucial defensive buff, items can turn the tide of a challenging encounter. The mechanic for using items in the heat of battle, however, isn't immediately intuitive. You can’t simply access everything stashed away in your inventory bags. Instead, the game requires you to pre-select and assign items to your Hero before a fight even starts. If you’ve been struggling to figure out how to access your potions and special gear when you need them most, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the entire process, from assignment to execution, ensuring you maximize your combat potential.
Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake: Use Items in Combat
Phase 1: The Inventory Prep—Assigning Items to the Hero
The fundamental rule of item usage in
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake combat is simple:
only items specifically assigned to the Hero can be accessed during a fight. Everything else remains locked away in your general storage bags.
How to Assign Items to the Hero
- Open the Menu: Access the main game menu.
- Navigate to Bags: Go to the Items section.
- Choose the Item Bag Tab: Select the Item Bag tab where your general stash is kept.
- Select the Item: Locate the consumable or item you want to carry into battle.
- Choose "Take Out": Select the item of interest and choose the "Take Out" option.
- Confirm Quantity: Specify the desired quantity you wish to assign to the Hero, and confirm the action.
The chosen items are now held by your Hero and will appear in the combat item menu.
Managing the Hero's Capacity
This process requires forethought because your Hero’s personal inventory space is extremely limited:
- The Hero can only have 20 assigned items at once.
- This count includes all equipped gear (weapon, shield, armor, and accessories).
- For a fully-equipped Hero, this often leaves room for only 14 extra items.
Because space is tight, you must be thoughtful about the items you assign.Prioritize things like status-curing herbs, high-tier healing potions, and crucial single-use defensive items.
Phase 2: Execution—Using Assigned Items in Combat
Once your Hero is properly stocked, using an item during a battle is straightforward.
Using a Consumable Item
- During your Hero's turn in a fight, select the main Items option from the combat menu (alongside Attack, Spell, or Defend).
- A sub-menu will appear listing all the items currently assigned to the Hero.
- Select the item you wish to use.
The Cost of Usage
Keep the following mechanics in mind when deciding to use an item:
- Turn Consumption: Using an item will consume the Hero's turn for that round.
- MP Neutrality: The major advantage is that using a consumable item does not cost any MP (Magic Points), saving your precious resource for essential attack or healing spells.
- Status Effects: Many items offer immediate, potent effects, such as healing, removing debilitating status effects (like poison or sleep), or applying temporary buffs, making them invaluable utility tools.
Phase 3: Advanced Tactics—Equipment as Items
Certain powerful pieces of equipment aren't just for providing static stat boosts; they can also be used as items during combat to trigger a special effect.
Identifying Usable Equipment
- Equipment that can be used in this manner will explicitly say so in its in-game description. For example, a weapon like the Faerie Foil might provide a defensive buff when actively used in battle, rather than just being swung for damage.
Assigning Usable Equipment
The assignment process for this equipment is almost identical to consumables, with one minor difference:
- Open the menu and select Items.
- Access the Equipment Bag tab (not the Item Bag).
- Locate the equipment you want to use in battle (e.g., the Faerie Foil).
- Select the item and choose "Take Out" to assign it to your Hero (if it isn't already equipped).
Using Equipment in Battle
- Once the item is either equipped or assigned to the Hero, select the Items option during combat.
- The equipment piece will appear in the menu alongside your consumables.
- Select the equipment item to trigger its special effect, consuming the Hero's turn for that round.
Clearing Out Your Inventory
If you need to make room for new, more critical items, you can easily move currently assigned items back into your general storage bags:
- Open the menu and select Items.
- Select the Hero's name to view their currently assigned inventory.
- Find the item you want to move.
- Select the item and choose the "Bag" option.
This action instantly moves the selected item back into your Item orEquipment Bag, freeing up that slot for a new assignment. By masteringthese inventory mechanics, you ensure your Hero always walks into battle prepared to use every resource at their disposal.
