In Death Stranding 2, the BT Umbilical Cord mechanic has evolved, introducing a new way to deal with Beached Things. Unlike the first game, where players used the cufflink to sever cords, Death Stranding 2 introduces the
Blood Boomerang—a specialized tool for safely eliminating BTs.
This guide explains how to unlock the Blood Boomerang, how to cut BT Umbilical Cords, and the rewards you’ll earn for doing so.
How to Unlock the Blood Boomerang in Death Stranding 2
Before you can sever BT Umbilical Cords, you must obtain the
Blood Boomerang. This tool is
not available at the start of the game and must be unlocked through story progression.
Steps to Get the Blood Boomerang:
Progress through the main story until you reach Order 16.Travel from West Fort Knot (F1) to the Northern Environmental Observatory.Complete the delivery mission for Mike Northcote.Receive the Blood Boomerang as a reward.Once you have this tool, you can start cutting BT Umbilical Cords safely.
How to Cut BT Umbilical Cords Using the Blood Boomerang
After unlocking the Blood Boomerang, follow these steps to sever BT connections:
Locate a BT – Use your Odradek scanner to detect Gazers (humanoid BTs). The scanner’s direction will indicate their position.Approach Carefully – Move slowly toward the BT, not just its cord.Hold Your Breath – Press R1 (on PlayStation) to minimize detection.Wait for the Prompt – When close enough, an on-screen prompt will appear.Sever the Cord – Press Circle (on PlayStation) to use the Blood Boomerang.
Sam will automatically cut the BT Umbilical Cord, sending the BT back to the afterlife without triggering a chase sequence. This method is stealthy and efficient, making it ideal for avoiding large-scale BT encounters.
Rewards for Cutting BT Umbilical Cords
Successfully severing BT Umbilical Cords grants valuable rewards:
- Likes (A form of in-game reputation)
- Chiral Crystal clusters (Dropped by regular Gazer BTs)
- Bonus Chiral Crystals (Gold Gazers drop more Chiral Crystals than standard BTs)
Chiral Crystals are essential for crafting and upgrading equipment, making BT encounters worthwhile.
Final Tips for Handling BTs in Death Stranding 2
- Use stealth to avoid alerting multiple BTs at once.
- Prioritize Gold Gazers for extra Chiral Crystals.
- Always carry the Blood Boomerang for quick, silent eliminations.
By mastering this mechanic, you’ll navigate Death Stranding 2’s eerie landscapes more effectively while gathering crucial resources.
