Capturing a BT in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach introduces an exciting new mechanic that goes beyond simply avoiding or eliminating these otherworldly threats. This system is not only required for unlocking the "BT's Best Friend" trophy, but it also opens up strategic possibilities for using captured BTs in combat later in the game.Here's everything you need to know to successfully catch a BT in Death Stranding 2.

How to Capture a BT in Death Stranding 2

It's important to note that you cannot capture every BT roaming the map. This system specifically applies to larger, boss-like creatures known as Catchers. These are the formidable BTs that emerge when Sam gets pulled into a tar pool during an encounter in a Timefall zone. You'll also encounter one of these giant creatures early on, specifically in Death Stranding 2 Episode 1.

Death Stranding 2: How to catch a BT

To initiate the capture process, there are a few key steps that must be followed.

1. Unlock the EX Capture Grenade

Before you can even think about catching a BT, you'll need to unlock a special piece of equipment: the EX Capture Grenade.

• Unlock Requirement: This item becomes available after completing Order No. 33, which is "Deliver Timefall-Resistant Emu to the Metagenomicist". This order becomes accessible once you connect the Metagenomicist to the Chiral Network. The Metagenomicist is typically connected around Episode 8: Deluge, which is a later stage in the game's campaign.
• Crafting Materials: Once the Metagenomicist is linked up and you've completed Order 33, you'll be able to craft the EX Capture Grenade at any Prepper terminal or facility using the following materials:
  • 120 Chiral Crystals
  • 30 Resin
  • 25 Special Alloy

2. Find a BT Zone and Trigger a Catcher Fight

• Locate a BT Area: Head into any BT area, which are easily identified by the presence of Timefall rain (the sky will darken, and eerie music will play).
• Trigger the Catcher: Allow yourself to be grabbed by the smaller BTs and pulled into the tar. This action will trigger the appearance of a Catcher, which is the only type of large BT that can be captured.

3. Weaken the Catcher

• Damage the Catcher: During the fight, use Blood Grenades, Machine Guns [MP] (specifically designed for BTs), or even non-lethal options to bring the Catcher's health down.
• Look for the Red Health Bar: Continue attacking until the BT's health bar turns red. At this point, the creature will appear significantly weakened and will start to open its mouth wide during certain attack animations. This open mouth will typically glow with a yellowish light, indicating it's vulnerable for capture.
• Tip for Evasion: Stay quick on your feet. When the tentacles start to rise, pressing L2 and tapping X on your controller as soon as possible will help you dodge effectively. It's usually safer to dodge sideways rather than directly backwards in these intense moments.

4. Use the EX Capture Grenade at the Right Time

• Aim for the Mouth: With the Catcher weakened (red health bar) and its mouth open and glowing, quickly equip the EX Capture Grenade.3
• Precise Throw: You need to aim carefully and throw the grenade directly into the BT's open mouth.
• Successful Capture: If done correctly:
  • The grenade will trigger a unique animation.
  • The BT will crystallize, leaving behind a White Chiral Crystal.
  • The "BT's Best Friend" trophy will pop shortly after, confirming a successful capture.
    

What Happens After You Capture a BT in Death Stranding 2?

Once you've successfully caught a BT, the game rewards you with more than just the trophy. You gain the ability to summon that specific type of captured BT to assist you in future Catcher fights or other large BT encounters. This adds a unique strategic layer to combat, allowing you to turn the tide of battle with your own monstrous ally. You'll find the BT Crystal (e.g., Delphis BT Crystal) in your inventory underSpecial Tools, and you can summon it during other large BT encounters.
