How to capture BTs with the EX Capture Grenade in Death Stranding 2

In Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, the EX Capture Grenade introduces a fascinating new layer to BT combat, allowing Sam to "capture" powerful Catcher-type BTs and later summon them as temporary allies. This unique ordinance is rewarded by The Metagenomicist upon completing Order 033, which involves safely delivering a Timefall-resistant Emu. While the game offers some initial guidance, the process of capturing and utilizing BTs can be a bit opaque.Here's a detailed guide on how to use the EX Capture Grenade and how to leverage your captured BTs in Death Stranding 2.

How to Catch BTs with the EX Capture Grenade

To capture a Catcher BT with an EX Capture Grenade, you need to weaken it and then precisely time your throw:

Lower the Catcher BT's Health: Begin by engaging the Catcher BT using your regular anti-BT weapons (e.g., Blood Grenades, Assault Rifles with Hematic rounds, etc.). Continue attacking until its health bar, visible at the top of the screen, turns red. This typically occurs when the BT's health is approximately two-thirds depleted.

Wait for the Mouth to Open: Once its health is in the red, wait for the Catcher BT to open its mouth. This action usually precedes one of its attacks.

Throw the EX Capture Grenade: As soon as its mouth is open, get relatively close to the BT and throw an EX Capture Grenade directly into its open mouth. The game is fairly forgiving with the hit detection; as long as you lob it at the front of the BT while its mouth is open, it should register.

Confirm Capture: If successful, a short slow-motion sequence will trigger, showing the Catcher BT calcifying and then melting into a rain of white particles. It will leave behind a glowing white BT Crystal on the ground.

Collect the BT Crystal: Approach and pick up the BT Crystal. This action effectively "captures" the BT. The Crystal is then merged with Sam's DOOMs blood to create a BT Core, which acts as a receptacle for the captured BT. The BT Core doesn't take up inventory space and doesn't need to be carried as physical cargo.

Practice Location: A good place to practice this technique is in the BT area located south of The Metagenomicist's shelter. This area often spawns a large Octopoid Catcher BT, providing an ideal target to hone your grenade-throwing and timing skills.

How to Use a BT Core in Death Stranding 2

Once you have a BT Core, you can summon the captured BT to temporarily assist you in combat.

Access Radial Menu: Hold Right on the D-Pad to bring up the Weapons/Tools radial menu.

Navigate to Special Section: Go to the "Special" section in the bottom left of the radial menu.

Cycle and Summon: Cycle through to the BT Crystal icon and then tap X (on PlayStation) to summon it.

Limitations on BT Core Summons:

There are specific conditions and limitations for using a BT Crystal summon:

• BT Area Restriction: You can only summon BT Crystals inside active BT areas (where the sky is darkened and your Odradek is actively scanning).
• Chiral Crystal Consumption: Summoning a BT consumes Chiral Crystals from your inventory. Ensure you have a sufficient stockpile of Chiral Crystals with you before attempting to summon.
• Reusable but Unique per Engagement: BT Crystals are reusable, meaning you don't lose the BT Core after one summon. However, a specific type of BT can only be summoned once per engagement (i.e., once per fight against a Catcher or during a major BTencounter). If you have multiple different types of BT Cores (e.g., anOctopoid Catcher BT Core and a Lion Catcher BT Core), you can use allthree in the same prolonged fight, but you cannot summon the same typetwice in that single encounter.

When these criteria aremet, the captured BT will appear and fight alongside you, primarilytargeting other BTs and never attacking Sam. They are particularlyuseful in engagements against other large BTs, providing significantfirepower and acting as a distraction. Over time, you can amass adiverse arsenal of different BT Crystal types to summon as needed,greatly enhancing your combat capabilities against the otherworldlythreats in Death Stranding 2.
