2022 has proven to be a massive year for gamers across the board, delivering as many surprise indie hits as triple-A masterpieces. But RPG fans had it particularly lucky with a string of memorable titles, from the old-school vibe of Chained Echoes to the dense lore of Elden Ring, and the mesmerizing visuals of Horizon Forbidden West. And the gift is bound to keep on giving, as 2023 has a lot in store to cater to even the most die-hard role-playing gamers.
After years of confusion amidst studios stricken by lockdowns and restrictions, much-awaited postponed entries will finally hit the shelves. Sequels that have been an excruciatingly long time in the making are also being slated for release alongside intriguing new titles. So, let’s dive into some anticipated RPGs coming out on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One in 2023.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf
Four years went by since BioWare announced a fourth Dragon Age installment at the 2018 Game Awards. Enticed by exciting concept art and promotional material, fans could only be looking forward to getting their hands on that brand-new title in no time. Yet Dragon Age 4 remained in development hell for years until, in June 2022, an official name was disclosed.
Titled Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the first entry in the franchise in ten years will be a direct sequel to its predecessors. Long-time fans can expect to meet some familiar faces, including elven apostate Solas as the main antagonist, who first appeared in 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition. No release date has been revealed, though, but this eagerly anticipated sequel is on track for a late 2023 release.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
JRPGs are a popular sub-genre for lovers of turn-based combat and atmospheric exploration. Unfortunately for Xbox owners, however, titles like Final Fantasy XVI and Fire Emblem Engage will be exclusive to PS5 and Nintendo Switch, respectively. Still, Xbox players can anticipate a lesser-known but equally as promising JRPG with Eiyuden Chronicle.
Developed by Rabbit & Bear Studios in collaboration with Japanese director Yoshitaka Murayama, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was the most funded video game campaign on
Kickstarter in 2020. This spiritual successor to Murayama’s Suikoden franchise will feature a swooping cast comprising 100 playable characters with unique abilities and stories. And this modern take on your run-of-the-mill JRPG is scheduled across Xbox Series and Xbox One sometime in 2023.
Lies of P
Last year has seen a renewed interest in the all-too-famous wooden puppet that sprung from the mind of Italian author Carlo Collodi. From a
Netflix adaptation directed by Guillermo del Toro to a Disney + live-action movie, Pinocchio played center stage on the TV screen in 2022. And the gaming industry is catching up with Neowiz’s Lies of P, only this action souls-like game meets RPG conjures up a much darker tone to the beloved fairytale.
Playing as Pinocchio, players embark on a quest to find Mr. Gepetto. But in a cruel world where humanity has given way to unspeakable horrors, fighting through and lying are the only means of becoming human. A bold reimagining of the classic tale, Lies of P might be one of the surprise gems of the upcoming year. And a recent Gamescom trailer has been hinting at a 2023 release.
Hogwarts Legacy
The wait is almost over for all Potterheads. Twice delayed since its official announcement in 2020, Hogwarts Legacy is just around the corner. The first open-world game set in the wizarding universe of Harry Potter, this much-anticipated RPG will allow hardcore fans of the franchise to live the dream, attending classes in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and exploring the ins and outs of the castle with fellow schoolmates. Futures wizards and witches shall wait a little longer before picking a Hogwarts House, however, since the game hits consoles on February 10, 2023.
Meanwhile, fans can plan a movie marathon or revisit older games. The internet is just as full of Harry Potter-centric entertainment, from virtual escape rooms to casino slots. Gamblers can indeed hit casinos such as
VegasSlotsOnline to find pokies like Proprietary Games’ Hogwarts. Top online platforms give access to thousands of free slots. First-timers can therefore try out an array of games risk-free. Lofty bonuses also await, from free spins to welcome packages.
Are you excited about the Xbox games to come in 2023? If you’re an avid RPG fan, the above games are sure to keep you entertained throughout the year.
