While a map and compass are ultimately in the game, they can be difficult to obtain particularly if you're trying to stay alive so that's the good news. Let me show you.
How to Get Map and Compass in The Forest
Permitting yourself to die once is the surest method to locate the Map and the Compass in The Forest. It shouldn't be too tough to die in this game, what with all the various ways players might meet their demise (from cannibals to traps they've set for themselves).
A cutscene showing you being dragged off by cannibals will begin after your health drops to zero. Hanging upside down in a cave is where you'll find yourself when the cutscene ends. To see your surroundings, light up your area using your flashlight. You can free yourself with the help of the Plane Pickax, which is conveniently located nearby. The game will end instead of triggering the cutscene if you die via drowning.
Just a little distance ahead, you'll see a body lying on the ground, clutching the Map and the Compass. Return to your previous hanging spot after picking them up. An exit from the cave will be indicated by a rope.
Getting the Map and Compass in The Forest doesn't have to involve dying, though. Instead of having your corpse carried to the cave by cannibals at a settlement in the game's southeast, you can do this by making your own way there. The fact that you won't have a good grasp of the world's layout without the Map further adds to the difficulty.
Once you reach an open area, you can establish your bearings by looking for the big snowy peak. Since the mountain is located in the northern hemisphere, when you face it, the south is behind you, and the east is to your right.
Gather some sticks and leaves to make a temporary shelter and take a break once you can see the peak clearly. Construct fortifications and amass necessary resources. After some time has passed, you will be able to engage with your Shelter in order to advance the time. You have to be patient till the sun comes up; that's when you'll wake up. In The Forest, as in real life, the sun rises toward the eastern sky. You can get your bearings by seeing the dawn and then piecing together the information. You should ultimately come to the Southern Coastline if you continue straight.
A couple prominent landmarks along the Southern Coastline deserve your attention. Go to the left if you notice brightly colored shipping containers. Continue on foot until you come upon a tree trunk. Look straight ahead until you reach a big tree in the distance, and then turn around and go on. A hut and a dirt trail should be visible as you approach the tree from the coast. The Cannibal Village can be reached by following the dirt trail.
Once you reach the Village, you might have to combat adversaries on higher difficulty settings.
Your trip to the Cannibal Village isn't going to be easy, which just adds to the difficulty. Along your journey, you may be ambushed by cannibals, which could throw you off your course. However, if you insist on doing things the hard way, you should skip fighting opponents in The Forest and head directly for the Cannibal Village.
