Learn how to craft and use Rain Totems in Stardew Valley to control the weather and boost your farming success!
In Stardew Valley, rain can be a valuable asset for watering your crops, catching specific fish, and triggering certain events. While you can't control the weather naturally, the Rain Totem is a craftable item that allows you to guarantee rain for the following day. This guide will explain how to unlock the recipe, craft, and strategically use Rain Totems.

Stardew Valley: How to Get Rain Totem

Before you can craft these weather-altering totems, you'll need to reach a specific Foraging level.
  • Foraging Level 9: The crafting recipe for the Rain Totem is unlocked when you achieve Foraging Level 9.
  • Gaining Foraging Experience: The most efficient way to level up your Foraging skill is by chopping down trees. You gain experience points for each tree you fell:
    • Large Stumps and Large Logs: Award 25 Foraging XP each.
    • Regular Trees (Maple, Oak, Pine, Mahogany): Award up to 14 Foraging XP for fully chopping down a mature tree.
As you continue to chop down trees and gather wild forageables, you'll eventually reach Foraging Level 9, and the Rain Totem recipe will automatically be added to your crafting menu (accessible by pressing "C" by default).

How To Craft The Rain Totem in Stardew Valley:

Once you have unlocked the recipe, you will need the following ingredients to craft one Rain Totem:

  • 1 Hardwood: Obtained by breaking Large Stumps and Large Logs on your farm or in the Secret Woods using an upgraded Axe (Copper or better). You can alsooccasionally get Hardwood from mining breakable boxes in the Mines.
  • 1 Truffle Oil: Processed from Truffles using an Oil Maker. Truffles are foraged by Pigs that you own and let roam outside.
  • 5 Pine Tar: Collected from Pine Trees by tapping them with a Tapper. It takesapproximately 5-7 in-game days for a Pine Tree to produce Pine Tar.

Simply combine these three ingredients in your crafting menu to create one Rain Totem.

Alternative Method: Finding Rain Totems:

While crafting is the primary way to obtain Rain Totems, you can also occasionally find one to three Rain Totems in treasure rooms within the Skull Cavern. However, this is a less reliable method compared to crafting, especially if you need rain consistently.

When To Use The Rain Totem in Stardew Valley:

Rain Totems are a valuable tool for various situations:

  • Watering Crops: Using a Rain Totem ensures that your outdoor crops will be watered thenext day, saving you time and energy, especially if you have a largefarm.
  • Fishing for Rainy-Day Fish: Certain fish species in Stardew Valley can only be caught when it'sraining. If you need to catch one of these specific fish to completeyour collection or for a quest, using a Rain Totem the day before canguarantee the necessary weather condition. Examples of rainy-day fishinclude the Catfish, Shad, and Herring.
  • Activating Certain Events: Some in-game events or NPC interactions might require rainy weather totrigger. A Rain Totem can help you ensure the right conditions for these occurrences.

Important Considerations When Using Rain Totems:

  • One-Day Guarantee and Consumption: Keep in mind that Rain Totems only guarantee rain for the immediately following day after you use them. Once used, the totem is consumed.
  • Localized Effect: The effect of a Rain Totem is localized to the specific region where you activate it.
    • Pelican Town and Ginger Island: These two locations have separate weather systems. If you use a RainTotem in Pelican Town, it will only influence the weather in PelicanTown for the next day. Ginger Island's weather will remain independent.
  • Festival Days and Season Starts: Festival days in Stardew Valley have pre-determined weather. If you use a Rain Totem on the day before a festival, the weather onthe festival day will be what the game has already set, and your RainTotem will still be consumed without producing rain. This same ruleapplies to the very first day of each new season. Using a Rain Totem on the last day of the previous season will not change the weather for the first day of the new season.

By understanding how to unlock, craft, and strategically use Rain Totems, you can gain a degree of control over the weather in Stardew Valley, optimizing your farming, fishing, and event progression. Happy farmingand fishing!
