Little Nightmares is a much-loved video game available on Xbox that has garnered a cult following since its release back in 2017. Much like the horror genre, it's enjoyed massive success, with gamers now more willing to try something new, even if it's somewhat out of their usual comfort zone.

Who doesn’t love spooky stories? They get the blood pumping and make you feel young again. In today's article, we'll look at Little Nightmares in detail, assessing just how spooky it is.

Is it spooky?

Little Nightmares is a horror video game, that much we know for sure, though whether it's scary or just spooky is another question entirely. It almost definitely gives you a severe case of the chills, which might be enough for you to call it scary or spooky.

If you haven't played it yet, the game revolves around a little girl named Six who, complete with her little yellow raincoat, wakes up in a scary new place called The Maw. This place is unlike anything else she's come across before, filled with mysterious passageways and unnerving creatives. She remembers little from before and has to learn as she makes her way to relative safety.

As the player, and Six for that matter, explore The Maw, we learn more about the protagonist's backstory and understand her on a more personal level, which adds an additional layer to the story. Whilst all this is happening, we meet more monsters seemingly hunting her down, forcing us to try and evade them at every turn. It's scary and perfectly paced in this regard.

What helps to make the game so spooky is the fact that there are visuals that may not be conventionally scary but are scary enough to creep you out somewhat, perhaps similar to how robots have an uncanny look about them. The game is filled with creepy moments that just ever so slightly raise your blood pressure, whether it be fast-moving monsters or shifting shadows.

You never feel relatively safe, even if you subconsciously think you might be out of the woods. The moment that you do allow yourself a moment to relax is when you suddenly realize that you're right in the thick of it, being chased by grotesque monsters. The sooner you accept that you're probably never truly safe, the much less scared you'll be – weird but true!

Little Nightmares isn't a game for those among you who are particularly squeamish or faint-hearted. It's not conventionally scary, in the same way a horror movie is, but it'll get your blood pumping through the entire game. Its gripping narrative and stunning visuals make this one of the most enjoyable games available at the moment – we absolutely love playing it!

What's it about?

As the player progresses through the in-game world, you begin to uncover more about Six’s past to unravel the mystery of why she ended up in such a place – while also trying their best to survive the dangers of The Maw. This double-pronged narrative helps keep you engaged, teasing you with information about the character's backstory while keeping you in the moment.

From creepy creatures that chase after her with seemingly no motive, to giant machines that threaten her life at every turn, Little Nightmares offers up plenty of suspenseful moments for players looking for an intense experience whilst still being able to have fun. It's this unnervingly spooky element that makes it so enjoyable. It's the reason why it can draw you in so deeply.

Overall, Little Nightmares is an intense, spooky, thrilling game that keeps gamers on the edge of their seats. Its captivating atmosphere and unique puzzles make it a must-play for anyone looking for an indie game that'll keep you engrossed for hours.

Tips and Tricks

Keep an eye out for clues

When exploring, always watch for interactive objects and clues to help you progress further into the game.

Watch out for monsters

Make sure to keep your wits about you and pay attention to your surroundings. Some of the monsters in The Maw are very sneaky!

Collect keys whenever you can

Collecting items like keys will open up new areas of The Maw and allow Six to explore further. Make sure not to miss anything!

Don't rush the gameplay

Take it slow. Rushing around corners or entering dark rooms without being prepared can often expose Six, making her vulnerable to attacks from monsters waiting nearby.
