League of Legends is a well-known name in the world of gaming. We are talking about one of the most popular titles in the world, with more than two million daily active players. The main inspiration for the game came from the Warcraft III map Dota, or Defense of the Ancients.

Even though Dota is now a standalone game, LoL has managed to find its spot in the industry. Those who played the game know that the map consists of three major lanes, top, mid, and bottom.

They may look the same at first, but beginners quickly see they come with their string of peculiarities. Understanding all these elements is key to being successful in this game. So today, we want to guide our readers through understanding these to improve their game.

The Top Lane

As the lane's name says we are talking about the one at the top of the map. If you ask some competent players, you will see that they often refer to it as an island. The reason is quite simple, players on other lanes cannot help in that part of the map so fast. So, you can see that this lane requires certain skills to survive.

At the same time, we can see that going to this lane also depends on the champion someone gets. For instance, range characters are encouraged to go to this one since they can inflict damage on opponent champions and perform the last hit on the minions much easier.

Besides having a champion who can perform these tasks effortlessly, it is also important to invest resources in a proper character build. Besides this aspect, we want to highlight the importance of warding in the top lane. By positioning them carefully, players can achieve much-needed visibility to predict opponent moves.

The Mid Lane

The shortest lane of them all is the middle one. It leads straight from one base to another one, without any shortcuts in between. Since this is the case, you will see that most teams decide that the mage characters will be in the middle at the beginning of the match. Moreover, since it is the shortest, it encourages the players to roam around the map.

It makes perfect sense when you think about this since champions can move to other ones much faster. Also, they can do it without losing the upper hand on the middle one. In games where the number of players is not five per team, all the characters may end up in the middle at one point.

Choosing champions for the mid-lane is more straightforward than in other cases. For instance, you will see that mages are the commonest choice by far. Our choice for the mid-lane would be Caitlyn, and choosing the proper build for her would do wonders against practically all opponent champions.

The Bottom Lane

The last major lane in the game is the bottom lane. You will see that it is often referred to as dragon lane. It's due to the proximity to the epic dragon monsters found near it. However, facing these dragons is not recommendable until the latter stages of the game, when the champions are strong enough to do it.

Also, dragons are one of the reasons why this lane is the most contested one in the game. By pressuring your opponents away from them, your team can get the upper hand to decide the match's outcome. The combination of champions in this lane is usually the mix of mages and high-damage-inflicting tanks.

Despite being the most contested, this is probably the most beginner-friendly lane. It allows the use of ADC (attack damage carry). These characters are easier to use, and because of their strength, they can survive much more damage than any other character.

The Jungle

Now we want to talk about a part of the map that’s not a major lane, but still is quite an important one, the jungle. We talk about all the space between the lanes when we refer to it. The jungle is filled with a lot of neutral minions and monsters. Players who slain them get higher gold and experience rewards.

Also, beating them offers additional player perks, like increased mana regeneration or cooldown reduction for spells. But, of course, these minions are somewhat stronger than the ones you usually face. Therefore, facing them is not recommended at the beginning of the match.

In addition, the jungle is a perfect place for teams to set up an ambush against their opponents. Since there are more, let’s say, geographical boundaries in these, the team can hide more efficiently. So, when the chance to ambush an opponent arises, the team can make the most out of these situations.

The River

Finally, the river is a part of the map where it gets most interesting in the game's later stages. Sure, a lot can happen here at the beginning, but you will mostly see players hesitant about going there since they can miss out on a chance to farm in their respective lanes.

Furthermore, the river is a part where you can seek out some of the most important objectives on the map. It also connects all three major lanes. So, when your champion goes to another one to assist the team members, chances of your going through the river tend to get quite high.

As a result, you can encounter opponent champions while you’re there. As with the jungle, a river is where most ambushes can happen, especially if they are close to the lane. To increase your chances of avoiding these dangers here, you should place a few wards to monitor it.

In Conclusion

Understanding all the particularities of the lanes in League of Legends is a way to get the upper hand over the opponents. Here, we’ve discussed all the relevant aspects in three major lanes and two additional ones. We are certain this insight will be crucial in improving your game in the future.
