Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is arguably the most colorful Assassin’s Creed game yet, set along the beautiful waters of the Aegean Sea. Ancient Greece is a picturesque location with gorgeous landscapes that you get to explore to your heart’s content. The map is so big that you could spend hours wandering around and still stumble across new places that you’ve never seen before. The dialogue between characters is immersive and realistic with lots of pirate lingo and interesting personalities that you get to interact with throughout the game.

Welcome to Ancient Greece

This game is set over 2,400 years in the past at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War. This war between Sparta and Athens lasted for decades as the two sides fought for power over Ancient Greece. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey sets the scene for this war very well, encompassing everything from the political struggle at the time, to the intense warfare that takes place on both sea and land. In total, there are over 60 hours of gameplay that involves everything from sailing across the oceans to galloping on horses as you try to uncover mysteries and create your own destiny. It’s clear why so many people come back to play this game over and over again.

Choose your character

Just as in Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (where you could play as either Jacob or Evie), in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey players can play either as a male or female protagonist. The choice is between two siblings, Kassandra and Alexios. The story doesn’t change depending on who you decide to play as, but there are some noticeable differences between the two characters. The main one is that the voice acting for Kassandra sounds a little bit better than Alexios, and fits the overall atmosphere of the game more effectively. The voice acting and delivery throughout this game are a bit hit-or-miss. Some characters sound really authentic and make you feel as though you’ve been transported back in time; however, others can sometimes sound like superficial impersonators. Aside from the voice acting, the animations and, more specifically, the facial expressions are very impressive. The emotions of the characters are captured exceptionally well, to the point where you really get a sense of how a character is feeling without them ever saying a word.

You control your destiny

One of the best parts about this game is the flexibility to choose the type of person that your character becomes. Whether this is someone with a strong sense of morals and justice, or a psycho killer, the choice is all yours. That’s what makes this action role-playing game so compelling: there really is no wrong choice. That being said, the decisions you make within the game will have consequences for how the rest of the story plays out, so think carefully before you act.

Beware the bounty hunters

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has an interesting notoriety/bounty system that essentially means that the number of crimes you commit in the game will impact how many mercenaries will be out looking for you to get the bounty that has been placed on your head. This can complicate things when you’re focused on completing the mission and a bunch of relentless mercenaries turn up, distracting you from your goal. Although this does add to how chaotic and unpredictable this game can be, it keeps it exciting when you’re playing for long periods of time.

Once you do manage to complete the lengthy storyline, there’s still a vast amount of missions, sidequests, and overall exploring to do. You could spend hours fighting things like mythological creatures or magnificent beasts, or just take in the immersive atmosphere of the city and landscape.

A must-play!

Overall Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a complete success and has solidified itself as a worthy addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The storyline and the in-game mechanics makes this game truly enjoyable to play, and it’s easy to see why so many people regard this game as one of the best Assassin’s Creed games out there. Although there are definitely some areas that could do with improvements, these issues don’t take away from the impressive action role-playing experience that this game offers. If you are new to the Assassin’s Creed franchise then starting with this game will give you a great introduction to the series.
