So I had a hard time finding the logs, and it wasn't until I started looking deeper that I discovered my mistake: I was barking up the wrong tree. Getting wood isn't as simple as chopping down a tree; you need to know what to look for.
How to Get Logs in Soulmask?
Before you start looking for a specific type of wood, make sure you have an axe. The first axe you can craft is the Stone Axe, which requires three stones and a branch to craft in the Items menu.
After equipping the Stone Axe, use the in-game toolbar to go to the dense forest; they're probably close to where you land. You'll find many different types of trees. To get the journal, look for a thorny tree as shown below and start swinging that axe. Finally, when you successfully hit the tree with the axe, it will fall to the ground and you'll get the log.
There are other types of trees, such as the ones with peeling gray bark, that are also used to craft logs. However, some trees, such as the belted trees found on beaches, drop only hardwoods.
Now that you know how to get logs in Soulmask, you can delve into this quest task once you're equipped and take care of crafting tools to progress through the game.
