How to Lay Your Own Roads in RoadCraft

By Ambar Jimenez | 2025-05-28 10:06:38
In RoadCraft, one of the most fundamental and empowering mechanics available from the early stages of the game is the ability to lay your own roads. This feature proves incredibly useful, especially when encountering challenging terrains like slushy mud, which can significantly hinder vehicle movement. Furthermore, the game's AI convoy routes are susceptible to being blocked by such difficult patches, making manual road construction an essential aspect of maintaining smooth and efficient city transport. To properly lay roads in RoadCraft, you will need two specific vehicles: a Dump Truck and a Dozer.

RoadCraft: How to Lay Your Own Roads

Step-by-Step Instructions for Laying Roads

Follow these detailed steps to construct a functional road in RoadCraft:

Phase 1: Transporting and Dumping Sand (Using the Dump Truck)

  • Ensure Your Dump Truck is Full of Sand:
    • Open your map in-game.
    • Adjust the map filter so that you can clearly see the radius of a nearby sand quarry. These quarries are your source for the necessary road-building material.
    • Drive your Dump Truck within this highlighted radius.
    • Once positioned correctly, press down on the D-pad (or the corresponding key/button for your platform) to begin filling your dump truck with sand. Wait until it is completely full.
  • Drive to the Desired Road Location:
    • Pilot your fully loaded Dump Truck to the specific area where you intend to lay the new road. This is typically a muddy or impassable section that needs improvement.
  • Raise the Dump Truck Tipper to Spill Sand:
    • Once you are in position, raise the dump truck tipper a bit until sand begins to spill out.
    • Recommendation for Dozer efficiency: While you can dump all the sand at once, it is generally better for the dozer if you dump it more slowly and spread it out along the intended path. This creates a more manageable layer for the dozer to work with.
  • Phase 2: Spreading and Compacting the Sand (Using the Dozer)

  • Enter Your Dozer:

    • After you have successfully dumped the sand into position along your desired road path, exit the Dump Truck and climb into your Dozer.
  • First Pass: Bulldoze and Compact:

    • Use the Dozer to bulldoze and compact the entire surface of the sand, spreading it evenly and smoothing it out across the designated area. Ensure full coverage on this initial pass.
  • Second Pass: Eliminate Lumps and Bumps:

    • Once you have completed the first pass, begin a second pass over the surface with the dozer, moving slowly.
    • This slow, deliberate second pass is crucial for eliminating any remaining lumps and bumps, making the road perfectly smooth. This is particularly important for the proper navigation of AI vehicles.
  • Key Considerations for AI Navigation

    • After completing the two passes with the Dozer, the AI should be able to use the newly laid road without any issues.
    • While a single pass might suffice for player-controlled vehicles to traverse the path, AI paths are more sensitive to uneven surfaces. Therefore, performing a second, slow smoothing pass is strongly advisable to ensure seamless AI navigation and efficient transport.
