Pokémon Legends: Z-A elevates the familiar city environment of Lumiose by introducing dynamic
Wild Zones—enclosed habitats where trainers can freely explore, battle, and capture Pokémon. After mastering the basics in Wild Zone 1, you'll inevitably move on to the next challenge:
Wild Zone 2.This new urban habitat presents a slightly tougher roster of six Pokémon, with one entry,
Staryu, designed to trip up trainers attempting 100% completion. That’s because Staryu is a creature of habit, only emerging under the cover of darkness. This guide will show you where to find all six species in Wild Zone 2 and, critically, how to manipulate the in-game clock to ensure the elusive Staryu appears.
Wild Zone 2 Roster: All Six Pokémon and Their Locations
Wild Zone 2 features a mix of Bug, Normal, and Water types, requiringtrainers to look beyond the tall grass and start utilizing theenvironment, including the water and trees.
| Pokémon | Type(s) | Encounter Location & Catching Strategy | Evolution Chain |
| Kakuna | Bug/Poison | Side of the Tree: Look on the western edge of the Zone, specifically near thenorthwestern gate. You’ll often find this cocoon Pokémon stationary onthe side of a tree. | Evolves into Beedrill (∼ Level 10). |
| Patrat | Normal | Cliffs/Northeast Bridge: Patrat often spawns on the middle cliffs in the Wild Zone.Alternatively, cross the northeast bridge and immediately turn right tofind more. Be careful, as the ones on the cliffs may attack and fall toyour level. | Evolves into Watchog (∼ Level 20). |
| Binacle | Rock/Water | Bridge Hub: Binacle can be found in the grassy area right in the very center of the Wild Zone, where the various footbridges converge. | Evolves into Barbaracle (∼ Level 39). |
| Magikarp | Water | The Rivers: You will find a large number of Magikarp swimming around the rivers and canals that flow through Wild Zone 2. They are simple to spot andcatch. | Evolves into Gyarados (∼ Level 20). |
| Budew | Grass/Poison | Southern Bridge: Look for this small Pokémon by the bridge located near the southernexit gate. Use the nearby tall grass to crouch (by pressing down on theleft stick) and surprise it with a stealth Poké Ball throw. | Evolves into Roselia (High Friendship, Day), then Roserade (Shiny Stone). |
| Staryu | Water | Water by the Northwestern Gate (Night Only): Staryu only appears when the in-game clock hits nighttime. Once it’sdark, head through the northwestern gate and look in the water nearby. | Evolves into Starmie (Water Stone). |
The Elusive Catch: Finding Staryu and Changing the Time of Day
Staryu is the primary hurdle for 100% completion in Wild Zone 2 because it is a nocturnal spawn. Unlike previous Pokémon games, you won't be able to manually cycle between day and night right from the start.
Unlocking Time Control
Before you can summon Staryu, you must first earn the ability to control time:
- Advance the Main Story: You will need to progress through the main narrative until you complete the fifth main story quest.
- Complete Side Quests: In our experience, this feature unlocks after clearing a series of three preceding side quests that precede the fifth main quest.
Once these conditions are met, the ability to pass time becomes available to you.
How to Change to Nighttime
With the feature unlocked, changing the time is simple:
- Find a Bench: Look for any benches scattered around the city. These are your designated rest spots foradvancing the clock. You can find some conveniently located near thenorthwestern gate of Wild Zone 2.
- Interact and Choose: Interact with the bench and choose the option to spend time there until nightfall.
- Confirm the Time: Once the environment darkens, head straight into Wild Zone 2.
Capturing Staryu
Staryu will now be visible in the waters of the Wild Zone. The easiest placeto locate it is in the water accessible just past the northwestern gate. Since Staryu is a Water-type, you can usually target it with a PokéBall from the shoreline without jumping in.
Pro-Tip: Remember that some Pokémon are tied to specific times, so utilize thebenches often! If you are ever missing a Pokédex entry in any Wild Zone, make sure you revisit the area during both the day and the night to ensure you catch all timed spawns.
With this guide, you should have no trouble completing your Wild Zone 2Pokédex, securing the versatile Staryu, and continuing your grandadventure through Lumiose City. Which of these six species will you beevolving first?
