We invite you to discover How To Find More Citadels in Path of Exile 2 with our detailed guide today.
Once the main campaign is done and Cruel difficulty completed for Acts 1 through 3, the Endgame gets unlocked, along with the Atlas of Worlds. In Path of Exile 2, on this Atlas map, players will find quite a few unique structures, all with their own set of gameplay mechanics or challenges: the Realmgate, Lost Towers, the Burning Monolith, and of course, Citadels.
Citadels are some of the trickier endgame targets to discover. Lost Towers poke out of the Fog of War, and both the Realmgate and Burning Monolith spawn near the starting position of the Atlas. Update 0.1.1 greatly improved the Citadels' visibility when seen from afar. If you can't seem to discover more of those structures on your Atlas map, here are a few tips to help you find more Citadels in PoE 2.
What's the Purpose of PoE 2's Citadels?
Citadels are one of the new kinds of map node in Path of Exile 2, and will come in Iron, Copper, and Stone varieties. Each contains a different Boss-a reworked version of some of the foes you'll fight through in the course of the PoE 2 campaign-but much more powerful and tailored to endgame. Killing these bosses gives you a Crisis Fragment apiece.
Essentially, these are Pinnacle Boss keys, used to open the Burning Monolith where the atlas pinnacle boss lives: the Arbiter of Ash. Congratulations, you've just completed the "Pinnacle of Flame" quest, which activated when you stepped into the Burning Monolith map and approached the locked door.
- Iron Citadel: Count Geonor (Boss of Act 1). It's a sprawling metropolis enclosed within dark walls.
- Copper Citadel: Jamanra, The Abomination (Boss of Act 2). A large camp site seems to have been set up around the map node.
- Doryani, boss of the Stone Citadel in Act 3. It's a pyramid of stone, similar to the ziggurats found in Act 3.
In order to access Citadels in PoE 2, you'll have to use a Waystone that is at least Tier 15 and then travel to its map node in order to activate the Citadel. As with any other Map, you only get one chance to clear and kill the boss without dying.
These are places that are worth the detour not only because of the Crisis Fragments but also because of the possibility to get really great loot from those bosses. When completed, a Citadel cannot be re-run. The only option is to go back into the Atlas and find another one.
How To Find More Citadels in Path of Exile 2?
Version 0.1.1 adds more prominence to Path of Exile 2 Citadels, so that they are much, much easier to spot from far away on the Atlas map. First and foremost, a beacon of light above each Citadel gets added in this patch, which is shown even through the Fog of War. This will make it much easier for one to find each Citadel with ease while navigating the map.
If no Citadels show up around your position on the Atlas map, then the best approach to find more places with a Citadel is just to move straight in one direction. This opens the most of the Fog of War and also substantially expands the overview of the entire Atlas map. As you continue down the path to any of the Lost Towers you discover, completing these will unveil a large swath of Fog around the tower, usually displaying a nearby Citadel.
The three varieties of Citadels are reportedly spawning within a specific biome. If you're after a particular Citadel to gain access to the Burning Monolith, head toward any of the newly revealed areas on your map that match the correct biome type.
Iron Citadels tend to generate in Grass or Forest biomes. Copper Citadels tend to spawn in Desert biomes. Stone Citadels tend to generate on the coasts of almost every biome.
When you find a Citadel, you can be sure that no others are around. In fact, when the Atlas map is zoomed out completely, it is very rare for more than one Citadel to fall within the same section. In order to find more Citadels beyond the first, you need only walk in a straight line, picking a completely different direction from that used to reach the previous one.
The 0.1.1 update now allows you to view any Citadel beacons within a few screens of your explored map areas. If you're not seeing any Citadels through the fog of war when this patch goes live, just apply the same logic to find them – walk in a straight line in one direction, and you'll eventually see a beacon cut through the fog to guide your way.
In this sense, knowing How To Find More Citadels in Path of Exile 2, allows you to launch yourself into an easier search in this game, try it.
