How to Beat Torvian in Path of Exile 2

Torvian, the Warden of the Chains, stands as one of the most formidable and mechanically unique gatekeepers in Path of Exile 2's campaign. Located in Act 4, this boss fight is a mandatory story checkpoint, meaning you cannot progress without defeating him. Many players hit a seemingly insurmountable wall here, not because of a raw lack of power, but due to a specific gimmick that makes him artificially overpowered. This guide will break down the fight into clear, actionable phases, ensuring you understand exactly how to counter his mechanics and claim your victory.

Understanding Torvian's Core Mechanic: The Mage Buffs

The primary reason players fail against Torvian is a misunderstanding of his core mechanic. Throughout the first phase of the battle, Torvian is continuously empowered by three spectral mages positioned on scaffolds at the north, west, and east edges of the circular arena. Each mage grants him a significant buff, drastically increasing his:

• Damage Output
• Defensive Layers (Armor/Evasion)
• General Survivability

Attempting to face him while these buffs are active is a futile effort. You cannot attack the mages directly. Instead, you must use Torvian's own attacks against him to dismantle his support system.

Phase 1 Strategy: Using His Strength Against Him

Your sole objective in Phase 1 is to eliminate the mages' influence. Fortunately, the game provides you with the perfect tool.
The Key Mechanic: The Boulder Throw

One of Torvian's most telegraphed attacks is where he digs up a massive rock and hurls it at you. The strategy is not just to dodge it, but to dodge it strategically.

Position Yourself: Identify which mage is providing the most dangerous buff (see below) and move to stand near that section of the arena's outer wall.

Bait and Dodge: Lure Torvian into throwing his boulder. Wait until the last possible moment before it hits you, then dodge sideways or towards the center.

Destroy the Scaffold: The boulder will continue its trajectory and smash into the scaffold behind you. A successful hit will interrupt that mage's channeling, removing their specific buff from Torvian.

Identifying Which Mage to Target

You don't need to memorize positions. Look beneath Torvian's health bar for three distinct buff icons:

• Dual Swords Icon: Represents a damage buff. Controlled by the North (Top) mage.
• Hammer Icon: Represents a defensive buff. Controlled by the West (Left) mage.
• Shield Icon: Represents a regeneration or mitigation buff. Controlled by the East (Right) mage.

Prioritize taking down the mage whose buff is causing you the most trouble.Typically, removing his damage buff first is advisable forsurvivability.

Once all three buffs are removed, Torvian will be in a weakened state, allowingyou a generous window to deal substantial damage. He will eventuallyregenerate the buffs, so you must repeat this process until his healthis brought down to approximately one-third.

Phase 2 Strategy: Surviving the Enraged Warden

Upon reaching low health, Torvian enters a final, enraged phase. The mageswill despawn, but the fight becomes a brutal test of your dodging andsituational awareness.

New Attack: Beam of Light

Torvian summons a massive, rotating beam of holy light that slowly sweepsacross the arena. This beam deals catastrophic damage on contact. Yourfocus must shift to:

• Constant Movement: Never stop moving. Kite Torvian while keeping one eye on the beam's path.
• Prioritize Dodging: The beam is your number one priority to avoid.

Enhanced Arsenal

All of Torvian's previous attacks are now infused with extra holy damageand are used more aggressively. The most dangerous is his Ricocheting Chakram, which can fill the already hazardous arena with bouncing projectiles.

Phase 2 Tips:

• Save Flask Charges: Enter this phase with all your health and utility flasks ready. This is not the time for conservation.
• Stay Calm: The arena becomes chaotic. Focus on dodging the beam and his most telegraphed heavy attacks. Only attack during clear openings.
• Use Mobility Skills: Skills that allow for quick, instantaneous movement (like Dash or Flame Dash) are invaluable for repositioning away from the beam and hisattacks.
