How to Type Colored Text, Gradients, & Emojis in Overwatch 2

During Season 17 of Overwatch 2, players have noticed a bizarre and unannounced change to the game's text chat. Messages are appearing in various colors, gradients, and even include symbols and emojis that are not part of the standard chat system. This has left many players wondering how this is possible and how they can do it themselves.This unexpected feature is the result of a bug that allows players to use a form of rich text formatting with hex codes. This guide will explain how to use these codes, what they do, and provide a list of known codes for various colors and in-game symbols.

How to Type Colored Text, Gradients, and Emojis

This text formatting is possible by inserting specific codes into your messages within angle brackets < >. The codes, which are likely a leftover developer tool, allow for a surprising amount of customization.It's important to note that this is not an official feature. Because it's a bug, there's no guarantee that it will remain in the game. It could be removed in a future patch, or Blizzard might decide to formalize it as a feature.

Using Hex Codes for Color

To change the color of your text, you need to use a specific code format:<FG[HEXCODE]FF> followed by your message.
  • The FG command stands for "Foreground."
  • The [HEXCODE] is an eight-digit hexadecimal code representing the color. The first six digits are the color itself (RRGGBB format), and the last two digits are the alpha channel, which sets the opacity. In this case, FF is full opacity.
  • The code must be enclosed in angle brackets < >.
For example, to type "Hello World!" in red, you would type the following into your chat bar:<FGFF0000FF> Hello World!To create a gradient, you can apply multiple hex codes within a single word or message. The color will smoothly transition between the codes you input.Note: If you use the Text-to-Speech feature, the bot will read out the entire code and your message, which can be very disruptive. It's recommended to turn this feature off or use it with caution.

List of Common Color Hex Codes

You can use a standard hex color picker to find more custom colors, but here is a list of some of the most popular ones:

Emoji and Symbol Codes

In addition to colors, players can also input emojis and symbols that aretypically used for in-game UI. These are not standard Unicode emojis but are instead graphics from the game's asset library.

The format for these codes is as follows:

<TXC[CODE]>

  • TXC is the command for "Text Character."
  • The [CODE] is the unique hexadecimal identifier for the specific emoji or symbol.
