How To Unlock All Characters in Neon Abyss 2

By Ambar Jimenez | 2025-07-29 09:21:38
Neon Abyss 2, the newly released roguelite, action-platformer, offers players a diverse roster of six unique Agents, each providing a distinct gameplay experience. Every Agent comes with a special starting weapon and a unique "Agent Item" that grants them passive bonuses, shaping their initial playstyle and opening up various build opportunities. While the default character, Nik, is available from the start, the other five Agents must be unlocked by completing specific in-game tasks. These tasks often align with the Agent's inherent affinity, guiding players toward mechanics that complement their design. Even though each character excels with different synergies, mastering the game's mechanics and diving deep into the Abyss is essential to unlock the full cast.Note: Neon Abyss 2 is currently in Early Access on Steam. The information provided below is accurate as of July 29, 2025, but may be subject to future changes or additions by the developers.

How To Unlock Every Agent in Neon Abyss 2

Agents serve as the playable characters in Neon Abyss 2. There are a total of six Agents available: Nik, Elise, Saya, James, Xuan, and Lúcia. You can switch between unlocked Agents on the Agent screen, located near the dance floor in the game's hub area. With the exception of Nik, the default starting character, every other Agent requires you to complete a specific Task to unlock them.
  • Checking Tasks: You can view your current progress on these Tasks on the screen located next to the Agent selection area, or by accessing the "Agent" tab within the in-game menu while you are at the bar.
  • Cumulative Progress: All Agent-based Tasks are cumulative. This means you do not need to complete them in a single run; any progress you make towards an unlock condition is carried over across multiple runs.
All Agents begin with varying amounts of starting Hearts (health) and different starting resources (like Bombs and Keys). However, all Agents universally start with three Crystals. Each Agent is equipped with a unique basic weapon exclusive to them, along with a special "Agent Item." This Agent Item provides unique bonuses, such as enabling them to wield an additional weapon simultaneously or granting a passive bonus towards a particular resource. While Agents often have a natural affinity for a specific item category (e.g., Xuan benefits from Wisp-type items), it's important to remember that any item category can work with any character. Their affinity simply makes it easier to kickstart a certain type of build. You are not at a disadvantage if you decide to run a Hatchmon-themed build on James instead of Elise, for example, as many items offer versatile bonuses that can benefit any Agent. Late-floor builds, regardless of initial affinity, can perform equally well.Tip: The Full Of Energy Fate Card is highly beneficial, as it makes you start all runs with two Shields. This can be a lifesaver for Agents with lower starting Hearts, helping you survive the early stages of a run

1. Nik

  • Starting Hearts: Three Hearts
  • Starting Resources: One Bomb and One Key
  • Best Faith For Them: Consumerism or Fortunism

Nik is the initial Agent available from the very beginning of the game. All you need to do to unlock him (and start your journey) is to simplystart a new save file and begin playing.

  • Exclusive Weapon: Windcaller

    • Fires an additional laser every four attacks.
    • The power of this laser increases with the number of Coins you currently hold.
  • Agent Item: Legacy Watch

    • Makes Nik drop coins every time he takes damage.

Nik has a slight affinity for Coin-type items, making them a good fit forhis playstyle, especially when combined with his Legacy Watch. Thissynergy is further amplified if you find abundant Coin-related items orchoose Coin-centric Faiths. He benefits greatly from getting a Loan from the Temple of Consumerism, especially if you avoid spending the loaned coins, as they contributeto his weapon's power. The Grabie Hatchmon, which provides additionalcoin gain, also complements his build.

Nik is considered one ofthe easiest characters to use due to his balanced starting health andresources. The fairly consistent Coin drops you acquire from clearingrooms ensure his basic weapon, Windcaller, remains effective throughout a run, which is particularly useful if you frequently encounterundesirable weapons from Challenge Rooms and Shops.

2. Elise

  • Starting Hearts: Four Hearts
  • Starting Resources: One Key
  • Best Faith For Them: Agapeism

Elise is unlocked by successfully hatching eight Hatchmon.

  • Starting Weapon: Warming

    • A Hatchmon-type weapon that fires short-range projectiles.
    • Every five shots, it produces one of several random, homing bullets with unique effects.
  • Agent Item: Plush Gloves

    • Allows her unique Hatchmon, Kiddy, to follow her at all times.
    • Kiddy cannot be fused with other Hatchmon.
    • Kiddy can revive nearby unconscious Hatchmon if it (Kiddy) is still active.

Elise's starting weapon and Kiddy give her a strong affinity for anythingHatchmon-type. The more Hatchmon you acquire, the more special homingbullets you'll generate from Warming's empowered shot, making it apotent damage-dealer, especially against highly mobile enemies.

If you have unlocked the Agapeism Faith from the Evolve Tree, it can be used to guarantee successful Hatchmonegg hatches, rapidly boosting your damage early in a run as it's easy to gain Faith for this category. Elise also synergizes perfectly with the Adorable Companion Fate Card, which ensures you start every run with two Hatchmon, immediatelykickstarting her weapon's bonus. Even if you plan to swap out Warminglater, the initial damage boost from additional Hatchmon is excellentfor clearing early Challenge Rooms.

3. Xuan

  • Starting Hearts: Two Hearts
  • Starting Resources: One Bomb and One Key
  • Best Faith For Them: Umbrism

Xuan is unlocked by having at least ten Purple Wisps with you during a single run.

  • Starting Weapon: Fanchen

    • A Wisp-type sword that releases Runestones that track down and damage enemies when fully charged.
    • The more Wisps you have, the more Runestones Fanchen generates.
  • Agent Item: Clarity Gourd

    • Grants brief invulnerability and a charge for his gourd when grazed by enemy bullets.
    • When fully charged, you can activate it with the Agent Skill Key to destroy nearby projectiles and release several Wisps.

"Grazing" a bullet means the projectile has to pass very close to you withoutactually hitting you. This can be done by intentionally moving near aprojectile's path and then quickly moving away, or simply by narrowlydodging.

Both Xuan's starting weapon and Agent Item give him astrong affinity for Wisp-type items. He can generate a significantnumber of Wisps for himself if you are skilled at dodging and grazingenemy projectiles. The brief invulnerability from his Agent Item isalways a helpful defensive tool, especially if you can consistentlytrigger it to gain more gourd charges.

4. James

  • Starting Hearts: Two Hearts
  • Starting Resources: One Key
  • Best Faith For Them: Artisanism

James is unlocked by using 30 Weapons across your runs.

  • Starting Weapon: Final Wolf

    • A Coin-type weapon that fires a spread of short-range bullets.
    • Its final shot in a burst is a long-range bullet.
    • The number of Coins you possess increases the number of bullets available in its spread.
  • Agent Item: Wedding Rings

    • Allows James to hold two Weapons at once: his Final Wolf and one additional weapon.
    • Increases the amount of Soul Shards he receives when Vaporizing Weapons.

Completing Challenge Rooms is the most effective way to accumulate Weapon usage for James'sunlock, as they always guarantee a Weapon drop upon success. Shops andthe Fire Support Fate Card (which provides free weapons) also contribute significantly to his unlock progress.

James functions as a versatile, "jack-of-all-trades" character, with a slight initial leaning towards Coin-focused builds due to his permanentstarting weapon. His Agent Item, the Wedding Rings, means he can rapidly upgrade any weapons he finds. The increased Soul Shards from Vaporizing Weapons allow even high-resource-requirement weapons to reachimpressive damage numbers early on, thanks to the associated Badges andArtifacts unlocked through weapon leveling. James synergizes perfectlywith the Temple of Artisanism, as even a single Vaporized Weaponcan nearly max out your Faith, granting you access to the temple'spowerful free Weapon offerings.

5. Saya

  • Starting Hearts: Two Hearts
  • Starting Resources: One Key
  • Best Faith For Them: Artisanism

Saya is unlocked by reaching Floor Five in a single run.

  • Starting Weapon: Sakurafall

    • A Jump-type sword.
    • Allows you to dash toward an enemy when attacking them, granting brief invulnerability during the dash.
    • Additional jumps (from items) increase the number of dashes you get.
  • Agent Item: Rabbit & Bear

    • Allows her to use Sakurafall.
    • Grants her the ability to hold two Weapons at once: Sakurafall and one additional weapon.

Even when not attacking an enemy, Sakurafall's dash effectively acts as afree movement skill. It's incredibly useful for dodging enemyprojectiles, repositioning quickly, or reaching higher platforms without needing additional jump items.

Sakurafall's level is directly dependent on the level of Saya's primary weapon. Therefore, with Saya, the optimal strategy involves Vaporizing unwanted weapons to level up her main equipped weapon as much aspossible, allowing Sakurafall to gain the full benefits of thatincreased power. Saya has a strong affinity for all Jump-type items;anything that grants her additional jumps will significantly boost bothSakurafall's damage output and your overall survivability, as you caneasily dash between enemies by simply aiming and attacking.

6. Lúcia

  • Starting Hearts: Three Hearts
  • Starting Resources: None
  • Best Faith For Them: Thesaurism or Consumerism

Lúcia is arguably the most challenging character to unlock, as she requires you to obtain and use at least 30 Curios. Curios often cost three or more Crystals to use, and Crystals can be in short supply depending on your luck during a run.

  • Agent Item: Grants her the ability to hold two Curios at once, and swap between them at will using the Agent Skill Key.

Since Agent Task progress is cumulative, a viable strategy for unlocking Lúcia is to perform quick runs of the early levels. Focus on trying to acquire a Curio as quickly as possible, often from a Crystal Chest or shop. Once you obtain and use the Curio, you can thenreset your run and try again, steadily accumulating progress towards the 30 Curio usage requirement.

Once unlocked, Lúcia can beincredibly powerful. Her ability to hold and swap between two Curios atwill, combined with items that improve Crystal drop rates and addCrystal containers, allows for incredible strategic depth. She can mixand match different Curio effects to deal massive damage to entirerooms, or apply diverse bonuses to herself, making her adaptabilitytruly formidable once you master her unique playstyle.
