Understanding the Volgin Boss Fight Arena

Your confrontation with Volgin occurs in the hangar bay of Groznyj Grad after your mission to destroy the Shagohod with C3. The arena is large and open, but features a key environmental element: a large power circuit on one side that Volgin will use to recharge his energy. Note the ammo supplies that will be provided throughout the fight to keep you stocked.

Phase 1 Strategy: Patience and Precision

The first half of the battle is a test of your composure. Volgin is initially invulnerable to direct attacks, so reckless aggression will be punished severely.

• Do Not Attack First: Resist the urge to open fire immediately. Volgin is shielded by an electric aura that will electrocute Snake if you use any equipped weapon, dealing massive damage.
• Observe and Dodge: His initial attacks are meant to overwhelm you. He will unleash slow-moving, yet powerful, bolts of electricity. Simply strafe or roll to avoid them.
• Master the CQC Counter: Volgin will often charge at you for a physical strike. This is your biggest opportunity. Time your CQC grab (square/X) perfectly as he approaches to throw him to the ground. While he is stunned, quickly equip your weapon and land a few shots before backing away.
• Exploit His Taunt: Occasionally, Volgin will turn his back to you to shout at Ocelot, who is observing from a higher platform. This is a free opening. Unload a magazine into him before he turns around.

Phase 2 Strategy: Managing His Power Source

Once you deplete approximately half of his health, the battle intensifies.Volgin becomes more aggressive and gains new, devastating attacks.

• The Recharge Tactic: The most consistent way to damage him in Phase 2 is to force him toexhaust his electrical energy. Continue dodging his attacks and usingCQC counters. Eventually, he will be forced to run to the power circuiton the side of the arena to recharge.
• Capitalize on the Recharge: While he is siphoning electricity, he is completely vulnerable. This is your primary damage window. Unload your most powerful weapon into him(an assault rifle is ideal). Dealing enough damage here can sometimesstun him, creating an even longer opening.
• The Area-of-Effect Lightning Attack: A new and dangerous move Volgin gains is placing both hands on theground. This signals a wide-area lightning attack that erupts from thefloor across a large portion of the arena. The moment you see thisanimation, roll repeatedly to avoid the damaging zones.
• Manage Your Ammo: Be aware of your ammunition. Ocelot will periodically drop supply packs into the arena. Always make a mental note of where they land and pickthem up when you have a safe moment.
