Discover essential tips on upgrading tools in Fantasy Life i. Enhance your gameplay and master crafting with our comprehensive guide!
In Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, players choose from 14 diverse "Lives," each akin to a class, offering unique skills for both exploration and progression. These Lives fall into three distinct categories: Combat, Gathering, and Crafting, each with its own specialized equipment. Combat Lives utilize weapons like swords and staves, Gathering Lives employ tools such as axes for resource collection, and Crafting Lives' tools are exclusively used during crafting minigames.
Fantasy Life i: How to Upgrade Tools
Gathering and Crafting Lives: Which Lives Can Make Tools, Weapons, etc.
Fantasy Life i features a rich ecosystem where different Lives interdepend.
| Category | Life |
| Gathering | Woodcutter, Miner, Angler, Farmer |
| Crafting | Carpenter, Blacksmith, Alchemist, Tailor, Painter, Cook |
| Combat | Paladin, Mercenary, Hunter, Magician |
- Unlocking Lives: It's important to note that the Painter Life and Farmer Life are not immediately available at the start of the game; you'll need to progress through the main story to unlock them.
As their category implies,
Crafting Lives are central to creating a wide array of items. For instance, the Carpenter Life enables you to craft various tools, weapons, and armor from raw materials obtained through
Gathering Lives. Therefore, to produce high-quality gear (Good, Great, or Top Quality), you must invest effort into leveling both your Crafting and Gathering Lives.Specifically, for crafting high-quality items, you should focus on these synergistic Lives:
- Miner Life: This Life allows you to break open the ore deposits found across every overworld of Fantasy Life i. Raising your Miner level and acquiring stronger tools and skills are crucial for breaking open higher-leveled deposits, which yield rarer and more valuable crafting materials.
- Woodcutter Life: Armed with an axe, Woodcutters can hack down various trees to collect different types of wood, which are then processed into materials essential for making tools and other wooden equipment.
- Tailoring Life: This Life is sometimes required for creating cloth materials that are used in specific armor recipes, such as capes.
- Carpenter Life: This Life is essential for making a wide range of tools and equipment, as well as furniture for your Base Camp and House.
- Blacksmith Life: Blacksmiths utilize minerals obtained via the Miner Life to create ingots. These ingots are then fashioned into swords and other 'metallic' tools and weapons.
How to Get Excellent in Crafting Minigames & Achieve Good Quality
To consistently create Good, Great, and Top Quality gear, you need to engage with a Crafting Station. Each Crafting Life has its own HQ/base, typically located in EterniaVillage. Equipping stronger tools is also highly recommended; forexample, using an Oak Saw instead of the basic 'borrowed' saw from thestart of the Carpenter Life quest will yield better results.
When you select an item to craft, pay attention to the Crafting Life icon next to a number at the bottom of the screen. This number indicates the Recommended Crafting Skills. On the left side of your screen, you'll see your current Crafting Skills. To increase your chances of crafting a better tool, you want yourCrafting Skills to be close to or exceed this recommended level. YourCrafting Skills can be enhanced by:
- Leveling up your Crafting Life.
- Unlocking relevant skills in the Skill Tree.
- Equipping a tool with a high Crafting Skill number.
Crafting Minigame Explained:
Once you've selected your tool and crafting recipe, you'll enter a minigame. Here, you must select the correct 'station' in time with buttonprompts. You have a set number of turns to complete all required actions within a time limit, displayed in the top-right corner. The time limitbar is in the middle, also showing the next station/prompt. To complete a prompt, you need to tap, hold down, or repeatedly tap the action button as instructed.
At the minigame's conclusion, you'll receive a ranking: Failure, Done, Good, Great, or Perfect, based on your performance.
You'll get a Good Quality craft item by doing any (or all) of the following:
- Ensure your Crafting Skills are near, equal to, or exceed the crafting recipe's Recommended Crafting Skills number.
- Achieve Great and Excellent scores during the minigame. Avoid "Good" scores and, crucially, avoid running out of time.
- Use a tool of a higher rank (e.g., Fine) or higher quality (e.g., Good). Higher rank/quality tools sometimes come with special skills that can extend your crafting time or provide other benefits.
Understanding Tool Ranks and Qualities:
Keep in mind that a tool's Rank is not the same as a tool's Quality. Whencrafting, you can often select from Ordinary, Fine, or (if unlocked)Notable ranks. While a Fine tool with no specific Quality is generallybetter than an Ordinary tool with no Quality, it's not always superiorto an Ordinary tool that has a "Good Quality" mark. If you arespecifically trying to craft Good Quality items for quests, stickingwith the Ordinary Rank but aiming for Good Quality during the minigameis often sufficient.
Strangeling Assistance:
After you start gathering Strangelings and restoring them to normal, you canrecruit them to help you with crafting. They will boost your CraftingSkills for that session, and you can even switch between charactersduring the minigame for their specific bonuses.
Crafting Skills to Level Up
You should regularly consult the Skills menu for each Crafting Life. The nodes within these skill trees contain valuable Skills that:
- Extend crafting time.
- Add more Skill Points.
- Unlock special moves that can auto-complete lower-leveled crafting recipes.
It's also recommended you work on unlocking the Spin and Hold nodes in the skill tree, as these tend to take longer to complete during the minigame than simple tap prompts.
- Note: Using Auto-Complete will generally not yield high-quality items (e.g., gear with GoodQuality) or give you more items (e.g., Logs) than manual crafting.
Best Equipment to Upgrade First & Recommended Tools and Armor
When starting your crafting journey, prioritize tools that will enhance your crafting output across multiple Lives:
- Good Quality Tools First: Generally, you should focus on obtaining Good Quality tools for the foundational Crafting Lives. Key examples include:- The Saw (Carpenter)
- The Hammer (Blacksmith)
- The Needle (Tailor)Since these three Crafting Lives are interconnected in terms of material production and equipment creation, having high-quality tools for themwill significantly increase your total Skill number across your crafting endeavors.

- Stronger Weapons Next: After securing good crafting tools, your next priority should be forging stronger weapons for your preferred Combat Life. For instance, if you favor the Magician Life, craft some Fine Pine Rods and aim for good quality.
Benefits of Quality Gear:
Tools, weapons, and armor that possess good, great, or top quality marks willcome with additional, beneficial skills. These can include:
- Elemental damage/protection.
- Enhanced SP (Skill Points).
- And various other perks that can significantly improve your character's performance and efficiency in the world of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time.
