In order to upgrade your frame you will have to make sure you get the blue orbs, one of the types of orbs that you can find in the game by defeating enemies and destroying objects.
To check the amount of blue orbs you have you will have to check in the upper left corner, and when you have a considerable amount for an upgrade you will have to go to a platform from where you can do it. These platforms can be found in many areas and look like lifting platforms on the ground.
