Ninji Unlocking Details
I tried many ways initially to find Jamboree's hidden characters. Perhaps you have sought refuge here. My major rush to get to Rank 50, hoping it would unlock some characters, was for naught as then I just flew through the easiest milestones to see new boards. Interesting but not at all what I had hoped for. I plunged myself deep into narrative mode, hoping it would save one of the characters on the last map or during the boss fight. Still nothing. Just my trusty balloon would suffice, just like Phileas Fogg.
Your journey begins at Party Plaza and ends on any number of islands reachable by hot air balloon. You can take pictures of random happenings, like a Goomba sunbathing, by zooming in and playing a minigame to take a photo. It only requires a handful of Party Points. Ninji is stuck between two island columns to the right of Rhythm Kitchen. Zoom in and take a picture to have Ninji.
Pauline's Unlocking
Just like with Ninji, poor old Pauline's become stranded on an island, but a slightly larger one. Just off to the side of Minigame Bay, on a desert island adorned with a parasol, sun lounger, and a palm tree - you will find her. To have Pauline on your roster, you merely have to zoom in and take a picture.
You can use them in any mode, on any board, in any mini-game, or even in any other mode once you obtain them. Well, the one exception is Mario-only Paratroopa Flight School. Also, you cannot change your character right in the middle of the story mode. If you started the saga but now want to follow Ninji and Pauline, you'll have to start all over again. Actually, Jamboree doesn't really see as big of a difference between the two, since they don't have special dice and neither one serves as a Jamboree buddy, so no mini-games. But the 22-man roster is complete so let the revelry begin.
