In this guide post we explain everything about Complete Guide To Fish Ponds in Stardew Valley.

With the 1.5 update, players can now raise fish and collect products in stone pools called fish ponds, adding a whole new dimension to Stardew Valley. Tons of new possibilities have opened up, including great new ways to make money on the farm, for players who were hoping for more practical use of the fishing mechanisms in the game.

There are so many different types of fish in Stardew Valley, each with their own personality and set of abilities. Adding fish ponds to a farm is a great way to add some variety to the animal husbandry options. Everything players will need to know about building them and making the most money is here.

Complete Guide To Fish Ponds in Stardew Valley

How to Build a Fish Pond

Like all other farm buildings, the fish ponds are sold by Robin in her carpentry shop. To build a single fish pond, players will need the following materials:

After two days, Robin will be done with the fish pond, and you will thus be free to place it at any 5x5 area on the farm.

What Type of Fish Can Thrive in Ponds?

After constructing a pond and catching a fish, the player may place it therein. Any fish caught using a fishing rod or crab pot can be placed in a fish pond on the player's farm. A collection of notable fish species can be found here, along with their "Extended Family" relatives for Mr. Qi's challenge. Sea urchins and coral are also acceptable, but they won't create anything.

How to Control the Number of Fish in a Pond

Size of the Pond

A pond with a capacity of three is ideal for many common species, such as carp and herring. The starting capacity is 1 for more uncommon fish species, such as sturgeon and void salmon. The fish will spawn every few days if the pond can accommodate them. The moment the pond is full, they will make a request to add more water.

An exception is the Tiger trout, which can only hold 10 fish and never breed. The only way to increase the population in the pond is by adding more Tiger Trout.

Population Discovery

Once the population exceeds a certain capacity, the pond will display a yellow exclamation mark above it. This indicates that the inhabitants inside are on a quest and have a request for an item from the player. Depending on what kind of fish it is, the item in question may range from insect meat to construction supplies, prepared food, rare jewels, or even cooked food. For a list of what items the various fish will ask for, see the Stardew Valley wiki.

Some species will request items as many as four times, while others will do so only twice. These can manifest in populations as small as one, three, five, or seven fish, depending on the species. After the last mission, a maximum of 10 fish may be held in the pond, that number increasing with each completed quest.

Each pond has a maximum capacity of 10 fish, except for the Legendary Fish and their relatives, which always have a limit of one fish.

Fish Ponds at Dry Spell

The "empty fish pond" option is always available to the gamer, so that they can easily empty their pond whenever they want. Any remaining fish in the pond will react by bouncing around like something thrown from a height. After that, the fish are free to be caught and added to the player's inventory. It will be practically if the fish pond was brand new now. Following the steps outlined above, the player is free to stock the pond with any fish that are allowed.

The Art of Pond Fishing

Anytime the player wants, they can throw their fishing line into the pond. By doing so, a player is able to add one fish to their inventory while removing it from the population count of the pond. Such a population will continue to increase until the pond reaches its full capacity, provided there is at least one fish left in the pond. This would mean that the player will have an endless supply of that species of fish, provided the pond is not fully drained.

You can craft any amount of maki rolls, sashimi, and quality fertilizer since these two recipes have fish as their base ingredient. Additionally, this could be very useful since players will have a favored dish to cook that will require one type of fish, which they can store in a unique pond.

Scavenging Fish Ponds for Their Contents

The species and number of fish in a pond determine how much food it can produce every one to three days. Exactly how much Fishing XP the player receives from picking up such items depends on the item in question. The more fish there are in it, the more frequently a pond will produce items for players to pick up. The more fishes are in the pond, the better probability rarer things may occur.

You can make Aged Roe-or Caviar, in the case of Sturgeon Roe-by placing it in a Preserves Jar; almost all fish have a chance to produce roe. The only exceptions are squid and midnight squid, which always produce squid ink. In addition to their edible roe, many species of fish also produce a range of other products. The Stardew Valley wiki has a comprehensive breakdown, but we've pointed out a few highlights below.

Which Fish Are Ideal for Pond Keepers?

Sturgeon

While any fish roe can be preserved in a Preserves Jar, Caviar can only be made using sturgeon roe. The value of this gourmet item is 500g, or 700g if you're an Artisan. The challenge of catching sturgeon is not without its reward, though. During the summer and winter, from 6am to 7pm, you can fish for them in the mountain lake.

Assuming a maximum pond capacity of 10 fish, a Sturgeon pond has a daily probability of producing 1 Roe of 71%, and a daily probability of producing 2 Roe of 24%.

Sturgeon Quests

  • Level 1-3: Reward: 1 Diamond
  • Level 3-5: Reward: 1 Jelly, 1 Pickles, or 2 Maple Syrup
  • Level 5-7: Reward: 3 Omni Geodes
  • Level 7-10: Reward: 1 Nautilus Shell

Marine Life: Stingray

In addition to roe, which is a byproduct of most fish, stingrays have a good probability of producing a plethora of other things, some of which are quite valuable and difficult to obtain. Among them are:

  • Maximum pond capacity: 4% daily probability of appearing in Magma Cap
  • Between 9 and 10% at maximum capacity, with 2–5 Cinder Shards
  • At maximum capacity, the Dragon Tooth has a 5% chance.
  • Chance of 9-10% at maximum capacity for the battery pack

After buying the Beach Resort on Ginger Island, players have access to Pirate Cove, where they can fish for stingrays. No matter the time of year or the weather, you can catch them.

Here's a rewritten paragraph that's more engaging for young readers:

Stingray Quests

  • Capacity before: 3
  • Capacity after: 5
  • Item requested: 7 Cinder Shards
  • Capacity before: 5
  • Capacity after: 10
  • Item requested: 1 Dragon Tooth

Blobfish

While they might not win any beauty contests, Aged Blobfish Roe commands prices that rival those of Caviar. Moreover, there's a slight opportunity for the fish pond to yield some incredible items once it achieves its full capacity:

  • Pearl, with a daily chance of 1.7-1.9%
  • 5 Warp Totem: Farming, with a daily chance of 1.7-1.9%

Experience the thrill of fishing for Blobfish while enjoying a ride in the Submarine at the Night Market.

Sturgeon Quests

  • Capacity: 3
  • Reward Options: 3 Coral, 2 Frozen Tears, or 2 Sea Urchins

Level 3:

  • Capacity: 5
  • Reward Options: 5 Coffee Beans, 1 Mayonnaise, or 1 Pizza

Level 5:

  • Reward Options: 1 Cookie, 1 Green Tea, or 1 Wine

Level 7:

  • Reward Options: 1 Rainbow Shell or 1 Rice Pudding

Cephalopod

Alongside the standard roe, an Octopus pond boasts a daily probability of 15-16% to yield 1-10 Omni Geodes when it reaches maximum population. Discover the wonders hidden within these vibrant, rainbow-speckled geodes, where you might uncover everything from Prismatic Shards to rare artifacts and essential building materials. Players have the opportunity to exchange them for exclusive items in Calico Desert.

For the best chance to catch an octopus, visit the Beach from 6am to 1pm in the summer months. Consider exploring Ginger Island West during these times, regardless of the season.

  • Item Requested: 3 Coral, 1 Honey, 1 Oyster, or 3 Refined Quartz
