How Does the Default Starting Scenario in Rimworld Odyssey Work

RimWorld: Odyssey, the recently released DLC, revolutionizes the game's starting experience with the introduction of the Gravship Starting Scenario. This scenario immediately immerses players in the new content, offering a unique mobile base gameplay loop from the very beginning. Whether you prefer the default experience or desire a highly customized start, Odyssey provides the tools to tailor your journey.

How Does the Default Starting Scenario in RimWorld: Odyssey Work?

The default Gravship Starting Scenario is designed to guide players into the core Odyssey gameplay. If you opt for this, your journey begins with:
  • A Gravship: This is your mobile base, allowing you to travel between world map tiles.
  • Legacy or Old Gravtech: Your gravship will be equipped with basic, older technology.
  • A Few Colonists: You start with a small group of survivors.
  • Nearby Salvage Spots: Your starting map will highlight nearby areas for resource gathering.
A defining characteristic of this default scenario is the timed threat from Pursuing Mechanoids. This persistent danger forces your gravship to constantly be on the move, preventing you from settling in one spot for too long. This impending threat also emphasizes careful resource management, as you'll need to use your limited supplies wisely to prepare for departures. The initial Gravship provided in the default scenario will have essential parts already installed, including:
  • Grav Engine
  • Pilot Console
  • Chemfuel Tank
  • Small Thrusters
  • Gravship Substructure tiles connecting these parts.
Modifying the Default Scenario: It is possible to remove the timed threat of Pursuing Mechanoids from the default Gravship scenario. To do this:
  • From the main menu, go to the Scenario Editor.
  • Select the "Gravship" default scenario.
  • Locate the "Pursuing Mechanoid" event in the list of scenario elements.
  • Click the trash icon next to it to delete this particular threat.
  • Remember to save this modified scenario before starting your game.
  • Keep in mind that while you can remove the timed threat, all other aspects of the default scenario (starting resources, ship parts, etc.) will remain the same. For more extensive changes, you'll need to create a custom starting scenario.

How To Create a Custom Starting Scenario in RimWorld: Odyssey

For ultimate control over your starting conditions, you can create a custom Gravship scenario:

  • Access the Scenario Editor: From the RimWorld main menu, select "New Colony" then "Scenario Editor."
  • Choose Arrival Method: In the Scenario Editor, set the "Arrival Method" to "Gravship." This will ensure your colonists start with space suits suitable for a gravship journey, but it will not automatically provide you with a functional ship.
  • Set Basic Scenario Elements: Configure your desired starting conditions, such as:

    • Number of Starting People (Colonists)
    • Forced Health Condition settings (e.g., healthy, injured, specific illnesses)
    • Food Need settings (e.g., full, hungry, starving)
  • Enable Dev Mode (Crucial for adding ship parts):

    • Before you finalize and play your custom scenario, you need to enable Development Mode in the game's options (from the main menu, go to Options >Development Mode). This will give you access to in-game tools to spawnthe necessary ship components.
  • Add Ship Parts via Dev Mode: Once Dev Mode is active, when you start a game with your customGravship scenario, you'll need to manually spawn the ship components onthe map.

    • Step 1: Add Gravship Substructure Tiles. This forms the floor of your ship. Look for the "Place Thing" tool inthe Dev Mode menu (usually along the top of the screen), search for"Gravship Substructure," and lay down the desired shape and size foryour ship's floor.
    • Step 2: Add a Grav Engine. This is the core of your gravship. Place it on the substructure.
    • Step 3: Add Other Essential Parts. Place these components on the Gravship Substructure, ensuring they are connected to the Grav Engine via the substructure:

      • Chemfuel Tank (Small Chemfuel Tank is sufficient for basic travel)
      • Pilot Console
      • Small Thrusters (at least one)
    • Step 4: Add Chemfuel. Your ship needs fuel to move. Use Dev Mode to add at least 200 Chemfuel into your Chemfuel Tank(s).
  • Save and Play: After setting all these elements (your colonist count, health, food, and then adding all the necessary ship parts and fuel via Dev Mode onthe starting map), you should save the custom Starting Scenario from the Scenario Editor. You can then begin playing your unique RimWorld: Odyssey journey.
  • Creating a custom Gravship scenario allows for unparalleled control over yourinitial challenges and resources, providing a fresh and personalizedexperience for every playthrough.
