What Is the Book of Bones, and What Does It Do?

The Book of Bones is a single-use, rare mystical item with two primary functions, both centered on a skeletal transformation:

Resurrect a Teammate: You can use the book on a deceased teammate's skeleton to bring them back to life. The catch? They return as a playable skeleton character.

Transform Yourself: If no one needs reviving, you can read from the book yourself to undergo a skeletal transformation immediately.

Becoming a skeleton grants a unique set of buffs and debuffs, fundamentally changing how you interact with the game's environment and hazards.Skeleton Transformation Effects:

Advantages (Immunities): You become completely immune to several debilitating status effects, including Hunger, Burn, Frost, Poison, Sleepiness, and Spores. This makes the transformation an excellent last resort to avoid starvation or to traverse hazardous areas like lava fields in CALDERA safely.
Disadvantages (Vulnerabilities): The trade-off is a drastic increase in fragility. You will take over double the damage from falls and explosions, making dynamite and high ledges your greatest threats. Your stamina management and carry weight remain unchanged, and you can still use healing items like Medkits and Bandages.

How to Find the Book of Bones

Acquiring the Book of Bones is entirely down to chance. It can only be found as a random drop from two sources:

Ancient Luggage: Your most reliable method, with no special conditions.
Ancient Statues: These will only yield a mystical item like the Book of Bones if every player in your team is currently alive. Coordinate with your team to maximize your chances.

Due to its rarity and single-use nature, communication with your team is essential before deciding when and how to use it.

Earning the Applied Esoterica Badge

The primary reason many seek out the Book of Bones is to earn the special Applied Esoterica Badge and the Skeleton Top cosmetic for your achievements sash. This must be done in a co-op game and requires precise coordination.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Acquire the Book: First, a player on your team must successfully find the Book of Bones from Ancient Luggage or an Ancient Statue.

A Strategic Demise: Another player on your team must die, leaving behind their skeleton on the ground.

The Ritual of Revival: The player holding the Book of Bones must then approach the deceased teammate's skeleton. A prompt reading [Player]'s Skeleton. (E) Revive? will appear.

Complete the Action: Hold your interact button (E by default) to channel the book's powerand resurrect your friend. The moment they are revived as a skeleton,the Applied Esoterica Badge will be unlocked for your entire team.
