Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 are different games in many ways, but some things remain constant between the groundbreaking original ARPG and its highly-anticipated sequel. Item Rarity works the same in Path of Exile 2 as it does in the original game.

In Path of Exile 2, you will encounter four different Item Rarity classes, as well as an array of Currencies that you can apply to upgrade your items in this more simplified ARPG system-from Normal to Magic to Rare. This guide covers item rarity in Path of Exole 2 and how items are upgraded in PoE 2 with the application of certain currencies.

How To Upgrade Item Rarity in Path of Exile 2?

The rarity classes in Path of Exile 2 are divided into four sections, namely, Normal, Magic, Rare, and Unique. Each PoE 2 item rarity class offers different gear Modifiers, the number varying with the rarity of an item.

Normal Items: Displayed in white text with no Modifiers except basic weapon stats.
Most common class of item to drop
Magic Items: Shown in blue text, each has at least one random Modifier.
Rare, typically received as drops from high-end enemies and treasure chests.
Rareties
Unique Items: Shining yellow text, contains at least 3 random Modifiers.
Very rare, can drop from any monster, though chance is much higher for bosses and high-end chests
Distinctive Items: Orange text, Often some of the strongest and build-defining items in PoE 2.
Extremely rare, contains predetermined modifiers that guarantee each is absolutely unique.
Upgrade your normal and magic items to the next tiers of Magic and Rare respectively, then further improve each rarity with modifiers. Unique items can only be created through specific sources.
Unique Items have a set list of modifiers which do not change, and additional modifiers cannot be added to Unique Items.
Upgrading Item Rarity: A Step-by-Step Guide In Path of Exile 2, players have two currency items at their disposal to enhance Item Rarity: the Orb of Transmutation and the Regal Orb. The two PoE 2 upgrade currencies let you directly upgrade your equipment from Normal to Magic and from Magic to Rare.

The Orb of Transmutation turns a Normal item into a Magic item, complete with a 1x Modifier.

A Regal Orb turns any Magic item into a Rare item, complete with 3x modifiers.

Upgrading a Rare item to a Unique item using similar currencies is just not possible – Rare is the highest tier for upgrading items in Path of Exile 2.

Learn three ways to get Orb of Transmutation and Regal Orb currencies: find them as world drops from mobs, chests, and more; buy them from certain vendors; or disenchant gear of the appropriate rarity.

Magic (blue) items can be disenchanted to get Transmutation Shards.
Collect 10x Shards to craft a full Orb of Transmutation.
Disenchant Rare (yellow) items to get Regal Shards.
Collect 10x Shards to craft a full Regal Orb.

These currencies can drop from world mobs unexpectedly and may pop into the Buy or Sell inventories of vendors as you progress on your journey. Make it a habit to check all loot dropped by enemies and browse vendor inventories each time you return to camp for those essential PoE upgrade currencies.

Improving & Adding Modifiers In Path of Exile 2 you will have two other currencies that will help you improve your items, but they won't raise the Rarity of the item. In Path of Exile 2, players can improve their Magic and Rare items by using the Orb of Augmentation and the Exalted Orb to add Modifiers.

An Orb of Augmentation enhances any Magic item by adding a Modifier, with a limit of up to 2x Modifiers.
Exalted Orbs enhance any Rare item by adding a Modifier, allowing for a maximum of 6 Modifiers to be applied.

To add a second modifier to your Magic item, you need to promote it to Rare using a Regal Orb, which also allows adding one more modifier to your item for a total of three. Then, use Exalted Orbs to add new modifiers to your Rare equipment.
